Batmobile Roams Chinatown

2008_0328_batmobile.jpgNa-na-na-na-na-na! The Batmobile made an appearance in Chinatown around 12:30 p.m. today, accompanied by a similarly-painted red and black Hummer. The guy driving the old-school 'Mobile parked it in front of the Verizon Center on 7th Street NW for a few minutes and was gone, presumably back to the Batcave, by about 1 p.m.

The driver was not exactly forthcoming when asked about the car, saying it was "for a church" and handing out cards for the Soul Factory, a local 5,000 member church. When asked where the car came from, the driver (who resembled church CEO Deron Cloud pictured on the card) said he got it "from an associate."

The card shows the car and reads "THE ORIGNIAL BAT MOBLIE" (sic), though I can't find more about the car on the church's website. Wikipedia says there was one original and three fiberglass replicas of the car, although the Soul Factory card says "The Original: #6 Car." Who knows, it was an amusing diversion at lunch time.

Anybody else see the car around town?

I saw it going down D Street between 6th & 7th right around 12:30. It was causing quite a stir. People everywhere were trying to get their camera phones out as quickly as possible before it turned the corner. I was actually just looking up to see if it was the real one or not. Sounds like it was a replica built to resemble the original TV series Batmobile.

There are four known Barris replicas of the original 1966 Batmobile. My Spidey sense is telling me that this isn't one of them.

Sorry, wrong comic book.

Probably some car nerd's project. A glance at monkey's link reveals it wouldn't be the first unofficial dupe.

Wow. Christians lying to get people into their con, that can't be true.

He was posted on the corner of 11th and F, NW for a while and wasn't too interested in spreading the "word" to the Asian tourists with cameras.

Well the #6 Batmobile was sold in an auction last year to an anonymous bidder (thanks Google). But I do know that several of the other Batmobiles are rented out for special events. Perhaps the Church is going into the crime fighting business as well as the soul saving racket.

"Perhaps the Church is going into the crime fighting business as well as the soul saving racket."

Then they will be busy writing tickets for illegal Sunday parking, yes?

Either that, or Bruce Wayne has accepted Christ as his personal savior.

This can only end badly.

if he really wants to help the people, cloud can become our local pastorpreneur. and by helping all those people, he'll be able to afford bigger and better stuff than batmobiles, like a picasso original from me

I'm glad it was the sleek Adam West-era Batmobile and not the "Tumbler" -- the Hummer-on-roids that served as the Batmobile in Batman Begins. Though they probably get about the same gas mileage.
