DC is on HGTV constantly. A lot of times, they find some 'mo in Logan or Shaw and spruce up their house. I'm jealous.

So will Galaxy Hut take paypal?

cash only, eh? isn't that the change that led to murky coffee not paying its taxes and getting closed down by the city???

Sorry for this inconvenience... but it will save me thousands per year in bullshit credit card fees!!!

ARGH! I HATE HAVING TO RUN A BUSINESS AND PAY FOR THINGS TO GIVE MY CUSTOMERS!!!! CAN'T YOU PEOPLE JUST GIVE ME MONEY??????

I don't get it.

OK, so why doesn't Galaxy Slut just raise the cost of each beer by 25 cents. It'll cover their bullshit credit card fees and give them extra profit to spare.... the douchebags.

The credit card fee excuse from Galaxy Hut is totally bogus...more and more bars in NYC are going cash only and it's not to avoid the fees, but it's to avoid the taxes...just ask around with some bartenders in D.C. and many of them know about the cash-only switch in NYC and why it's happening....

does this mean we're in a recession?

Not to mention that they more than likely get a cut of the ATM fees.

Lary (only one "r") from the hut just finished getting shaken down for money by ASCAP and BMI, two of the three major music publishing groups who have a little scheme where they put the muscle on any bar that plays music, allows karaoke, or has bands that play cover songs. Not that any of that money will ever make its way to musicians, and especially not local ones. Its a way to funnel bar revenue nationwide to Nashville, LA, and NYC.

The wee little hut has had its share of misfortunes-losing liquor license, etc. Its a great place, though this move may not make sense for the hut. I can only imagine that it raises the hut's (and the bartenders') IRS audit risk exponentially since they are going all cash and there won't be any external records of how much money goes in and out of that place. The costs of defending against that sort of problem makes the credit card fees pale by comparison. It is also gives off the impression that Lary is effectively externalizing the financing expenses for bar tabs to his customers and likely also making money off of the atm fees, especially since there aren't many nearby atms.

It is a nifty idea to turn a financing cost into a source of revenue, but drunks are fickle about the appearance of things. Perhaps better PR to raise his prices than to keep them the same and make running up a tab less convenient. If people have to think about how much cash they have on them, they will monitor their spending more closely and will likely end up buying less.

But bars are a for-profit business, and Lary should have a free hand to try new ways of getting by, but perhaps he will give this a try and decide to go back to accepting credit cards. I can only imagine that there are a lot of drunks out there who finance their drinking on credit cards while they wait for payday to roll around. Anyway, I'll still support the hut because it is the best bar around.

Lary from Galaxy Hut here. We are not going cash only. Sorry if I pissed anyone off, I'm not a greedy bastard I was just trying to streamline my expenses, but fuck it if it's going to put me in this kind of light. Charge away!
