Howard University Parking Lot Drive-By Mostly Ignored

A reader brought to our attention this story from The Hilltop, Howard University's student newspaper, covering an apparent drive-by shooting in one of the campus parking lots last week. According to the article:

At exactly 2 a.m. Wednesday morning in the West Towers parking lot, a drive by shooting occurred. Four gun shots, the sound of tires screeching and yelled explicits woke some students up abruptly. "All I heard was gunshots, so I walked to the window and saw a gold car drive by," said junior speech pathology major Nyla Funderburk

...When campus police were contacted by The Hilltop, they said that the case was "already being investigated".

This is old news by now, having happened over a week ago, with this article in The Hilltop appearing on Tuesday. What surprises us more is that the Hilltop's story seems to be the only place this was covered anywhere, be it print, television or blog. We realize that "if it bleeds, it leads," and no one was injured in this case, but is it true that if no one bleeds, then it might as well have not happened at all?

Considering how shootings in schools and on university campuses are usually big news, that this one flew completely under the radar of anything other than the school newspaper seems odd, even if no one was hurt. Is a shooting without a victim on a college campus really not news, or are the expectations of what's "news" on an urban campus different from those at a college outside a city?

Wow black people shooting each other. That's news!!!! Come on the reason its not "news" si because their shooting each other all over the city. Oh, that's right we aren't supposed to mention the race of any criminals.

It's a combination of the neighborhood and the fact that Howard's a black college. If this happened at any other urban DC school (GW, Georgetown, American, even Catholic - which is in a bad neighborhood as well) it would be covered in the local papers. I live a few blocks away from Howard and it's sad to say that the reason it isn't being covered by mainstream press is because it's Howard, but that's what it is...

I used to live 2 blocks from there (in what is now a modern condo canyon) and I can think of several instances of bloody happenings that no one noted. About 3 years ago they found a body in the play area of a preschool... I know this ONLY because my neighbors used that preschool and couldn't drop their kid off. No news coverage. About a year earlier, my husband saw a knife-wounded guy fall down and die while trying to get to the Howard emergency room. He called the cops, but no one heard anything more about it. There were a lot of 'walking wounded' heading for that emergency room - victims of bar fights, muggings, worse. Maybe that factor dampens media enthusiasm for the stories.

I'm almost relieved I can't afford to live there any more.

@Old_city

If you wonder why you're generally going to be ignored and branded as an idiot, look at your substitution of "their" for "they're". I can't wait to see how you blame your tenuous grasp on the English language on affirmative action.

Try, not shooting each other since nobody got shot. The fact that it was a college campus is, I suppose, slightly more interesting, but the main reason this incident wasn't covered by news agencies is that it's NOT NEWS.

It could have been some yahoos shooting in to the air making it no news. When I lived on 6th and RI Ave, I would hear gunshots never to be followed by sirens. And who is to say the car squealing tires had anything to do with the gunshots? Were there any witnesses to the actual firing of the shots? Because there are all of these questions that is why it is not being covered, gunshots in that neighborhood are unfortunately all too common.

I guess my two questions doesnt really constitute "all these questions"...why is there no edit button?

I mean, growing up on the mean streets of Rhode Island what do I know, but it seems here that someone fired shots at a student and missed him, then sped off. In my book, this is an attempted drive-by. No one was injured. Is it scary, yes. But not especially newsworthy.

A shooting at an HBCU not getting coverage!! SHOCKER!!!

the media doesn't care... thanks for spreading this...

the media barely covered the Delaware State shooting last year, so this is no surprise

I love conspiracy theories, so here is mine:

I wonder if some of these condo developers’ are paying off the cops or the media to keep crime, in their location of interest, on the down low. I know there is zero evidence and this is wild speculation, but deep down inside I am sure there is some kind of hank panky going on.

@RJ

Your theory is entirely plausible; a few dinners, sports/concert tix, etc. can do a lot to make you the first phone call when something goes down in your "location of interest."

@BigL

I've often wondered the same thing.

Yeah I think it wasn't covered 'cause it happened at Howard. I doubt the same media ignorance of the event would happen if it were GW or God forbid Georgetown. I live right by Howard and stuff like this gets ignored all the time. Although I guess another reason is 'cause Councilmember Graham can't try to shutdown Howard as is his all purpose response to any crime in Ward 1.

From what I gather from people's comments is that it's not news now because no one got hurt (ie, the intended target was missed)...

...but it sure as hell will be news when the target is hit and killed and the families are shown grieving on the news. Granted, it's just a blog, but shouldn't people be calling for a more serious investigation and news coverage of this event, especially if it helps prevent the "attempted" being taken out of "attempted murder?"

It seems that as a group, the people who post on DCist have their values on this subject a little skewed. And when I say "skewed," I mean "seriously messed up to the point of sociopathy."

Thanks for making sweeping claims about "the people who post on DCist" based on one person's comment in this thread, demonfafa. I think it's pretty obvious to anyone with minimal reading comprehension that the original DCist who posted this item and the majority of people who have spoken up so far think ignoring the situation is a serious problem. Don't let reality get in the way of your grumpy broad-brush social theorizing though . . .

demonfafa, honestly, is a single post at DCist going to make a huge difference in whether or not this gets solved? And if there is a massive DCist-led campaign to get this solved, is that duplicable every time shots are fired somewhere in the city?

Granted, it's just a blog, but shouldn't people be calling for a more serious investigation and news coverage of this event . . .

Words 2-5 answer your question. I sincerely doubt that even if (and this is a gigantic if) everyone on DCist held hands, sang Kumbiya, and called for a more thorough investigation of this incident that anything would come of it. Furthermore everyone here knows that, so there's no reason to interrupt this afternoon's snarkfest with social responsibility.

Seriously, how do you think the word would spread to the appropriate police powers? Would Patrolman X, surfing DCist on his free time see this story and subsequently tell his Sergeant, "Hey, Demonfafa, Hillrat, and Monkeyrotica think that we should investigate that shooting up at Howard where no one got hurt more thoroughly." To which Sgt. Peckerwood answers, "Those DCist commenters are right, we should spend some time investigating that shooting where no one was hit even though the homicide clearance rate in DC continues to hover around 50%!!"

meelar,

Not at all. But I find people's indifference to attempted murder to be rather disgusting.

@Demonfafa

I laid it on kind of thick with that last post, but I'm just sayin' . . .

I find people's indifference to attempted murder to be rather disgusting.

I laugh to keep from crying.

When I read the story my first call was to my cousin who is a freshman at Howard, her take on it was, "Meh." How upset should I get?

it is not going to be covered by local media because the whole incident revolves around JUST THE SOUND of gunfire. no one hit, no property damage. maybe that's news in Georgetown, but the real point here is that in this neighborhood that happens all the time, and after awhile it simply becomes too common to be news. and to those who write the news, the fact that it happened in the ghetto trumps the fact that it happened on a university campus. and oh yes, it is still the ghetto. it kinda sucks, but is anyone really surprised by this?

but I'm just sayin

heh. That's what people say when they say something they know is wrong and offensive, but somehow that phrase makes it all okay. For example:

"I think the elderly should be isolated and studied to see what nutrients we can extract from them... but I'm just saying!"

I'm just jerking your chain a bit, but still I have the feeling the media is saying, "If we can't get any shots of anyone friends or parents crying, who cares?"

It's simple to say "because it's Howard," and probably right as far as it goes, but how far IS that? Why exactly would info about an incident like this get to the citywide media had it happened in Georgetown, but not Howard? Who calls whom? Do journalists pick stories like this up via police reports or a tip/source?

NOTE: This is a separate question from the journalistic decision about newsworthiness.

Good question, Ian. I don't really believe this, but it's a cynical theory that I must at least carefully consider:

If they tell everyone about all the failed shootings, then people might start taking precautions.

Then, there wont be any successful shootings.

And what will they report about then?

Fact: gunshots are more common around Howard than around Georgetown. It's still a big deal, but not as out of the ordinary.

Someone should start a "shots fired" blog for DC. It would be interesting to note the various locations where and when people report gunfire. I have to imagine people would be a lot more willing to do a quick email or twitter than to call and deal with the DC police.

Considering my personal experiences with the DC police, I hope I never have to deal with them...especially to ask for their 'help'.

Anyone else sort of shudder at the use of "explicits" as a noun? In a newspaper ? Do you think they meant expletives?
I'm just sayin...

But are we missing the bigger picture?? Its spring, in the middle of campus visits from high school students. The shooters have bad timing. Also add in the fact that HU has enough money to pay off whomever and keep things quiet...hmmm....oh and go f**k yourself to the person with the comment about black on black violence. uncalled for.

Someone should start a "shots fired" blog for DC.

That's actually a damn good idea. Tuesday night at practice we had shots fired in the townhouses to the SW of our field, I don't know if anyone was hit but the ghetto bird was out for a second.

Considering my personal experiences with the DC police, I hope I never have to deal with them...especially to ask for their 'help'.

See Hillman? It's not just me that hates and fears interaction with 5-0.

"I think the elderly should be isolated and studied to see what nutrients we can extract from them... but I'm just saying!"

We going to have a surplus of elderly soon and no real plan for fixing Social Security and health care, we have to consider all alternatives.

"See Hillman? It's not just me that hates and fears interaction with 5-0."

Your choice. But don't come crying to me when DC police return the favor and ignore your neighborhood. Of course, you could probably successfully argue which came first...

I agree that many DC cops are crap. But even the crappy ones on occasion have to pretend to care. And that at least gets you something, even if by accident.
