Servathon 2008: We've Got a Site

2008_0408_servathon.gifSincere thanks to all of you who have volunteered to join the DCist team for this year's Servathon. Forty-six of you will be rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty with us on May 3. The good news is Team DCist finally has a site -- Harriet Tubman Elementary School at 3107 13th Street NW. The school was chosen primarily because it was one of the few places that could fit our massive numbers of volunteers, as well as its convenient location just one block from the Columbia Heights Metro.

And there's something for everyone -- whether you want to work on your tan, or you'd prefer to keep your allergies in check by avoiding the pollen combat zone that masquerades as D.C. springtime.

Our projects will include painting the health suite and the bathrooms, as well as the exterior window panels. Nature lovers can do some landscaping of the courtyard. We'll even have "kid-friendly" projects like planting flowers and shrubs and creating stepping stones for garden spaces.

You have done a rock star job of raising money this far -- $1,700. Our overall goal is $4,000, so if you've signed up to help, think about sending an email to friends and family for support. If you're not able to come with us on May 3, we hope you'll click over and throw $10 or $20 our way to help us reach our goal. Remember, this money goes to help local non-profits keep their doors open throughout the year.

so, given the proximity, is a beer or two at wonderland afterwards a possibility?

If you're a volunteer and prefer free beer, the Servathon folks are having an after-party with beer and food. Buses will take volunteers from their school to the TBA after-party site.

If you don't think you can make it, can you drop by the site in person and lend an unofficial hand if your plans change at the last minute?
