Popemobile Route Revealed

Mercedes-Benz-Popemobile-01.jpgThe Archdiocese of Washington may not have been amused by WMATA's bobblehead Pope video, but they certainly still want area faithful to use public transit to catch a view of the pontiff when he travels around the city via popemobile later this month. To help people plan, they've released the official popemobile routes for Pope Benedict XVI's visit to Washington on April 16 and 17.

On April 16, which is the Holy Father's 81st birthday, he will leave a meeting with President Bush at the White House in the popemobile at noon and travel west on Pennsylvania Ave. past Washington Circle, and then north on Rock Creek Parkway before exiting at Massachusetts Ave., where he'll arrive at the Vatican embassy near Observatory Circle. Later that day at 5:15 p.m., he'll also travel by popemobile from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops headquarters at 3211 Fourth St. NE along Fourth St. to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. The public is invited to line both routes.

The final popemobile ride will take place after the papal mass at Nationals Park on April 17, but viewing along this route is by ticket only. At around 6:15 p.m. that evening, he will travel from the campus of Catholic University through the south side of campus, north along the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, then north on Harewood Road to the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center.

Like we needed more proof the guy's a nazi. He replaced the Popemobile with a freaking VW Thing!

At this rate, I expect to see him make his grand entrance crossing the Anacostia in a Schwimmwagen.

A word of advice if you plan on seeing the Pope-a, do not mess with his posse. When I was 17, my friends and I got kicked out of St. Peter's Basilica for causing a ruckus. Most of us left peacefully (fearing the wrath of JPII) but one of my friends ended up getting sucker punched and dragged right out the front door. So if you're either civically disobedient or totally gay, beware.

How ironic, the timing of the Pope's Popemobile Tour. Right during rush hour. The Holy Father is going to create unholy traffic problems.

Yeah, those Swiss guards don't f*** around. Looking forward to some antipapist getting impaled on a halberd. We haven't had a good piking since they ran all the Irish out of DC on one back in ought-six. Once we were done scapegoating the Spaniards for the Influenza outbreak, we went after the Irish, which is why you still can't get good bubble and squeak in this town. Now, where was I? Oh yeah, stay out of my liquor cabinet!

Can we have a Pope Day, please? We haven't had a snow day for ages...

I'm lazy. When is someone going to post the Google Maps layout of the popetrail?

Kisses!

Thx!

Will that guy protesting child abuse outside the Vatican Embassy be there? Or will he be tied up somewhere by the renegade branches of the Swiss Guards?

And the Pope will be staying in his embassy which across the street from Dick Cheney's lair. Make your own jokes.

I love that guy. He always waves whenever you honk at him!

I heard it through the Devine Grapevine that he'll be serving up pre-mass treats at the stadium's Ben's Chili Bowl. Then following mass, he'll be christening the one false-god he DOES recognize...the porcelain god.

Thanks for the tip, TimmyTucker. I'll be sure to go down there so he can "bless my halfsmoke." Can't wait until he annoits it with oil; I only hope my cup don't runneth over. Drycleaning that outfit must be a pain the sepulchre.

wait a minute, yesterday they said one of the reasons for pulling to wmata pope advert was because the pontiff never wears a red cape....YET HERE'S PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OTHERWISE.

methinks the church doth'd protest'd that advert too much...

IMGoph, it's not the red cape that was the problem. It was the red cap. The cap, or zucchetto, signifies rank.

The zucchetto on the Bobblehead was red, signifying the rank of Cardinal.

The zucchetto in the above picture is white, signifying the rank of the Pope.

I only eat the green zucchini. I just get nervous with the different colors.

yo joan - you clearly don't work for the right people, because we're getting a Pope Day this year. in fact, TWO.

What's the proper, Hallmark-style gift to give a loved on on Pope Day? An indulgence? A laying on of hands? Doing it rhythm-method style?

Q. What do you call people who practice the rhythm method?

A. Parents!

Nyuck, nyuck, nyuck.

Now I will have to go to confession.

Who is paying for this? The Catholics that are so psyched about it?

Oh, that's right. No. It's all of us, subsidizing someone's personal religious practice again.

No love for the Vicar of Christ today? Come on, people now. Smile on your brother. Everybody get together, try to love one another right now.

drew, i'm a lapsed catholic, and i remember what the difference between the colored yarmulkes is, but i just thought i remembered reading a quote from the articles yesterday that both that and the cape were the wrong color (that was the claim), and that was the reason(s) why the bobblehead was incorrect. then we see the red cape today.

anyway, it's all nitpicking. the whole thing is ridiculous.

SEIG HEIL, MEIN FUHRER BENEDICT !!!

I'm jealous Miss Bee...two free days off? Hell, I'd convert for that.

I don't understand what the big deal about the red cape and hat was. His Bobble Holyness was just getting in the spirit of things and wearing Nats colors. There was just no overhead shot where you could see the DC on top.

thank goodness i'm off for emancipation day.
