Marvin May Get Grahamstanding of a Lifetime
We've become used to the routine -- violence breaks out at/near District bar; Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) publicly demands that bar's liquor license be pulled in the name of public safety/the children/puppy dogs; bar goes under. So reliable has Ward 1's representative on the D.C. Council become in his ability to appear before the cameras after a violent incident at a local bar that the City Paper has even coined a term for it -- Grahamstanding.
Well, new U Street hotspot Marvin may soon get the Grahamstanding of a lifetime. According to the Examiner, Graham's trusted chief of staff, Ted Loza, had a run-in with a bouncer at the club in late March, leaving him with a nasty black eye. And though Marvin, ummm, bounced the offending bouncer, Loza may still take action. Writes the Examiner:
Loza’s filing also said he plans to take “legal action against the establishment and its owners for fostering this type of unprofessional behavior” (among its owners are Eric Hilton, part of the famous D.C.-based DJ duo Thievery Corporation), and possibly bring up whether Marvin’s liquor license should be suspended. We imagine that Loza is smart enough not to use a little Saturday-night run-in as an excuse to let his boss loose on the place. But if he really did make the threat -- we're not sure he did; note that it's the Examiner's words there, not Loza's -- the folks at Marvin may as well start hoping that virgin martinis and bottles of Kaliber are big sellers.

good thought exercise here, martin. here's hoping that graham doesn't decide to bring crash the convertible VW bug of justice through the doors of dcist anytime soon either...

Some of it's the Examiner's words, but some it is a direct quote from the report Loza "filed with the police department." Of course, unless and until he actually files some kind of lawsuit, or convinces Graham to initiate some sort of Council proceeding, this threat doesn't amount to much more than the guy blowing off steam while attempting to cover himself.
Of course, Graham's probably not foolish enough to take any action based on this incident, since it would end up turning into a "he said, he said" argument where his staff member might come out looking foolish. Even the description in the article doesn't make Loza seem blameless, and in the comments someone describes him as acting like "a drunken ass" that night. Since the actual fight occurred after he left the club, and the bouncer in question has already been fired, I doubt this'll actually amount to anything.

An (alleged) witness in the Examiner's comment thread claims Loza was being a farking drunken weasel that night and is mis-representing everything. I find that just as likely an explanation.
In which case, this is not newsworthy and all concerned parties should be burned at the stake in the middle of Malcolm X Park at Dawn during the Summer Solstice.

I'd imagine Mr. Loza's night started out something like this.

Gawd, what a picture (from the Examiner)!!!
I can see every pore on that boy's face.

And what in the world did Mr Loza do to "deserve" that black eye? Hmmmm??? Oh yes, I see that he was coming to the aid of his female friends. But that's just his side of the story. I'd be interested to hear the otherside.
Not that I'm biased or anything... But I do remember a story of some other public service aids being a bit... douchey.

it sounds like loza made the first move by pushing the bouncer, even though he says the guy was rude to his female friends, one or two of whom he was probably trying to hook up with. perhaps this was his way of showing chivalry.
and i LOLed at the link West posted. so true of so many DC guys.

public service ads? no, aides. Sorry, lack of spelling strikes again.

Acting pretty tuff for a little person.

Of course, it seems like it's always little squirrelly guys that are jumping bad and getting into fights. The guys I know that train and are legitimate badasses never step to anyone while they're out and about.

Well I've certainly witnessed some unprovoked asshole-ish behavior from the security at Marvins, including some targeted at my wife, which is why we no longer go there. That, and the place is a total douchefest.

My dramatic re-enactment of how that fight went down:
Don't you know who I am?
[Punch]
Ow! I'm going to get you!
[Punch]
Ow! You're messing with the wrong...
[Punch]
Help! Police!
[Punch]
I'm totally gonna take your liquor license...
[Punch]
[Punch]
Please stop.

my friend was also assaulted by the bouncer there a couple weeks ago

That, and the place is a total douchefest.
You're just saying that because you ordered the $15 hamburger and they wouldn't let you f**k it. Believe me, it's not worth it. It makes a lot of noise, but it's all an act. I think the burgers there are frigid.

From a first hand account, let me make clear that Loza was not blameless at all that night. He was an obnoxious, drunken idiot that brought this on himself. He's the one who should lose a job, not anyone at Marvin.

It sounds like this is/was a battle of douchebag versus douchebag. ESL and their ilk think they are the shit, kind of like Late Night Shots with a different wardrobe. And Grahamzilla and crew think they can do whatever they please in this town and get away with it, free of consequences.

yeah, we need to stop all this douchebag on douchebag crime...
or not, wait a minute, how about we solve things honorably? Segway joust at dawn? that's the only true way for la douche to settle matters.

Segway globe-of-death joust. Nuff said.

Well, it is ironic that Graham is so anti-bar because he was always going to La Cage, Secrets and all the other gogo-dancer bars. I would see him every weekend and we would talk because he liked me. Go figure. Duh. I have met many men like him who seek to wipe out that which they enjoy. If I was a psychologist I could try and figure it out but I'm not. Anyway, this is typical hypocracy.

Loza should worry more to work hard in order to pay his 4 child support.
