They should call the hotel "The Metrosexual on U." Says it all: Metro accesible, gay friendly, about five years out-of-date. Or, since tourist guides and real estate moghuls love the term "vibrant" they should call it "The Vibrator on U." With lots of those magic-fingers massage beds and lots of Mojo Nixon on the jukebox.

The hotel would more than likely have underground parking, which may mean rentable spots to people in the neighborhood, which would get some of the cars off of the street. And then through the magic of induced demand, cars will reappear and then all you'll have is more traffic.

I think a hotel on U-street is a great idea and I like the idea of it being more of a boutique type hotel rather than a Hilton or family type place. A hotel in that area has a great draw for young mid 20s people visiting the city - close to Adams Morgan and Dupont and right on top of a metro line. Also, a lot of people dont have space in their apartments for 3-4 friends to stay for the weekend. The hotel would more than likely have underground parking, which may mean rentable spots to people in the neighborhood, which would get some of the cars off of the street. I'm absolutely all for this project.

Wow two Coen brothers references in just two posts. For what it's worth, Jelly Roll Morton set up shop on U St. late in his life. Maybe someone could open up a pastry shop in his honor. But I like the Stoakley Carmichael idea. Is U Street ready for a big swanky hotel? Nope. Maybe some smaller, quirky Kimpton-style place in an existing building would work, but I'm having a hard time seeing something large and luxurious being very successful on the U Street of today. In a few years, maybe.

I don’t know-I think they are running out of famous people from the 20s who lived near U Street to be the theme for buildings (the ellington, langston lofts, busboys and poets, etc). Maybe they could start naming new buildings after the people that destroyed much of the city during the race riots. They could name the hotel the “Carmichael” and could house a VIP lounge called the “Burn baby burn room.”
