Weekly Music Agenda
MONDAY
>> All hail queen Dolly! She of the sparkles and the wigs and the global endowments and the eponymous amusement park and the Smokey Mountain Christmas is gracing Fairfax with her presence this evening at the Patriot Center. Excuse us while we listen to Jolene about 35 times on repeat. $45.50 to $75.50, 7:30 p.m.
>> If you were headed to Galaxy Hut tonight to see Marty Royle, your search will be fruitless. However! Sad Crocodile and Sean McArdle will still be making the music happen at Arlington's best bar. $5, 9 p.m.
>> New York's The Rosewood Thieves have lent melodies to Entourage and Grey's Anatomy. Tonight, they'll be soothing the savage beasts at DC9 with their strummy, sunny sound. With John Wayne Hero and pygmylush. $8.
>> It's Monday night, do you know where your local alt country musicians are? If you answered "Iota," you clearly know what you're talking about. The Moderate, Bellflur and Chris Walker share the stage tonight in Clarendon. $10, 8:30 p.m.
>> If Damian Rice makes you sleepy, but you still have a soft spot for soulful dudes with guitars, try David Ford on for size. He's joining Sarah Bareilles (she of that inescapable yet kind of catchy song about what she's not writing a song about, kind of like Carly Simon did a long time ago but with more Michelle Branchiness) at the 9:30 Club. The show's sold out, but Craig and our good friends on the sidewalk outside the club may be able to offer you some help.
WEDNESDAY
>> The victims of the Mt. Pleasant fire may be out of the headlines, but they're still in need of support. Local bands Kitty Hawk, Sugarcane Crawl, FEVER, US ROYALTY, WILD FICTIONS, The Coats, and Ra Ra Rasputin are getting together to do just that. Head to La Casa, a house at 3166 Mt Pleasant St NW doubling as a venue this Wednesday to raise money for those displaced by the fire. Doors are at 7:30, music starts at 8.
THURSDAY
>> Give your soul a workout with Van Hunt at the Black Cat. The James Brown-inspired singer is doing a solo acoustic set on the mainstage. $20, 8 p.m.
>> While Youssou N’Dour himself will not be in town, you can see this Senegalese singing legend onscreen at 8:45 at Landmark’s E. St. Cinema for one of two Filmfest DC showings of “Youssou N’Dour: Return to Goree.” In this road trip film, N’Dour sings with an Atlanta gospel group, New Orleans musicians, New York beat poets, and European jazz players (the movie can also be seen on May 3).
>> As far as we know, Julie Ocean is not related to Billy Ocean, no matter how hard we wish for it to be true. In fact, Julie Ocean isn't even a person. It's a band. A local band that's playing this week at DC9 with Baby Teeth and The Redwalls. $10/$10, 9 p.m.
FRIDAY
>> The Kills' name has been on the lips of gossip bloggers, thanks to member Jamie Hince's relationship with Kate Moss, and local bloggers, thanks to their incredible new album Midnight Boom. When I saw them supporting their last album at the Black Cat, I developed an all-encompassing girl crush on VV Mosshart. With all this in mind and more, do yourself a favor and spend Friday night at the Cat. $15, 9 p.m.
>> Three Stars alums New Rock Church of Fire and The Black & White Jacksons join Hammer No More the Fingers and Caverns at the Velvet Lounge this Friday. All four bands are perpetually supporting each other, so it'll be a great night of rock when they all come together on one stage. $8, 10 p.m.
>> Something so strong is happening at the 9:30 Club on Friday that it's already sold out. But, we'd be remiss if we didn't remind you that Crowded House will be in our midst this weekend.
>> Veteran reggae crooner Luciano has gotten nice reviews for his latest effort “Jah is My Navigator.” Expect some cuts from that release at Zanzibar on the Waterfront where he will be with opening acts Micky General and Shabaka.
SATURDAY
>> We'd like to pat the Black Cat on the back for putting together a lineup that couldn't be more perfect. It's no secret that we love The XYZ Affair (who played Unbuckled last year), Jukebox the Ghost and Travis Morrison. All three bands pour their hearts, their energy, their creativity and their considerable abilities with harmony into their live shows. It's gonna be a night of pure, 100 percent fun. $12, 9 p.m.
>> Don't be confused — the Velvet Lounge isn't playing the new comic book-inspired blockbuster Iron Man on Saturday night. For that you'll have to visit... any movie theater anywhere. However, they are hosting Iron Man, a metal band from Baltimore. $8, 10 p.m.
>> As 40-something singer from Belize, Andy Palacio was receiving accolades for his 2007 album, and preparing for a U.S. tour, when he suddenly passed away in January. In his honor a “Tribute to Andy Palacio” will occur for free at 8 p.m. at Lisner Auditorium featuring The Garifuna Collective, all women group Umalali, and others. Palacio’s sweet Garifuna pop drew from the Caribbean coast of Central America, combining West African, Arawak Indian and European influences.
SUNDAY
>> Mark Olson, of the Jayhawks, will bring his solo take on alt country to Jammin Java this weekend. Reviewers are salivating over his latest release, The Salvation Blues, so jump on the Orange line and see what you think.
>> Spanish Harlem Orchestra, a busy New York City-based ensemble with vocals, piano, plus plenty of horns and percussion, has since 2000 brought its take on classic Latin salsa to audiences worldwide through plenty of touring and several CDs. They’ll be at the University of Maryland Clarice Smith Center at 7:30 p.m.

sara with no h. i saw her a year ago when she opened for aqualung and i was immediately hooked.
i can't wait!!! is anyone else going? rachael yamagata is an opener too...i'm also a fan.
after i chided for misspelling Sara, i misspelled rachel yamagata's name...serves me right.
helluva good week. a couple more:
4/29 - American Music Club at Iota. The new album ain't great but some of their older material is killer.
4/30 - Fake Problems w/ Anti-Flag - i saw fake problems opening for another band a few months ago. seriously good.
5/1 - Redwalls at dc9. if you're not familiar, they did a great daytrotter session last fall that i think is still available.
i'm bummed i'm not going to be in town for that black cat show saturday.
"Global endowments" FTW!
Yeah, just to follow up on Hoodrat's post -- that Julie Ocean/Redwalls show at DC9 is on Thursday, not Tuesday. Should be awesome.
5/3 - above & beyond @ club glow
