Ben and Jerry's Free Cone Day Today

20080429-benandjerrys.jpgAnother day, another dollar. Another year, another free cone day. In celebration of their 30th anniversary - despite the fact that the giveaway occurs every year - Ben and Jerry's is offering one free scoop of ice cream to customers between noon and 8 p.m.

Although all the classic flavors will be available, including Cherry Garcia and Phish Food, the company has previously used their free cone day to unveil new concoctions. This year they are: Coconut Seven Layer Bar (coconut ice cream, fudge flakes, walnuts, swirls of graham cracker and butterscotch), Imagine Whirled Peace (caramel and sweet cream ice creams mixed with fudge peace signs and toffee cookies), ONE Cheesecake Brownie (cheesecake ice cream with cheesecake brownie chunks), and Cake Batter (yellow cake batter ice cream with a chocolate frosting swirl).

In addition, the company touts music and entertainment to lure customers into their stores. Has anyone seen any "entertainment" at any D.C. scoop shops, or is everyone preoccupied with getting through the long lines? Either way, free ice cream doesn't come without a minor price. Expect downtown lines (such as Eastern Market and Dupont Circle) to be long, but quick moving.

Participating shops can be found in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

stay away from Union Street! :-D

i might have to go more than once...

and on the 31st baskin robbins is sellins 31 cent scoops all day, limit is 8 per person i think. happy brain freezing

see y'all at dupont circle this afternoon. i'll be the kid crying because his cone fell on the ground when a bike messenger knocked it out of his hand...

there is no april 31 sweetheart, that event is tomorrow.

i was pissed when they got rid of my favorite flavor, oatmeal cookie chunk. bastard hippies.

hmmmm then maybe baskin robbins day is MAY 31. wouldn't make sense for the purveyor of 31 flavors to sell 31 cent scoops on the thirtieth. thanks guest 10.

nope, it's still just tomorrow. april 30th...

I never get anything other than chocolate at Ben and Jerry's (or anywhere for that matter), that way I'm never disappointed.

Hmmm, I was thinking of having an after-lunch scoop, but from Tysons, I'm nearly 15 miles equidistant to four locations: Reston, Fairfax, Georgetown, and (farthest) Alexandria. None are an easy trip. Sigh.

Have a chocolate chip cookie dough cone for me.

Has the Dupont Circle shop reopened. They were closed last time I was in that vicinity...

sprite: i called the number on the website for the dupont location, and the message i got said they were open for free cone day...

Just got my scoop at the Old Post Office building...line moves quickly and free ice cream tastes better! wish I'd read the new flavors before going over 'cuz it would have been fun to try them...there's still time!

thanks for noting where you got your scoop, cchurches. i had no idea there was one so close to my sad, lonely office. damn. i read it too late to save me from ascetically holing up at my desk with a cup-o'-soup.

Got my scoop but I picked the wrong time to go - just after schools let out. The line was really long but moved quickly.

sprite/IMGoph: The Dupont location has been open for two or three weeks now. They had some sort of serious plumbing issue, I believe. Plus the movie theater being sold probably didn't help move their reopening very much.
