Breaking: Students Shot at NE School

2008_0429_crimetape.jpgABC7 is reporting that two students were shot this afternoon at the Excel Institute in Northeast. There's not a lot of information yet about what happened, but the good news is that both students' wounds appear to be non-fatal, and the gunman was caught while fleeing the scene near 19th and C Streets NE.

After the suspect entered the school and shot the two students, he carjacked a vehicle outside, then attempted to carjack two more vehicles, before finally succeeding with the third. During his run, he hit and injured a police officer when he struck the car, and then injured a pregnant women after hitting her car. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said there doesn't appear to be a motive at this time.

i mean, hell, there has to be a motive, right??? you don't just shoot up a school for no reason. maybe the police don't know it yet, but how can they say there's no motive?

Holyyyyyyy CRAP!

Lanier didn't say there wasn't any motive, just that they didn't have any information on it yet.

Happy Grand Theft Auto IV Day, everyone!

@IMGoph: I think it's mainly a technicality. Even in situations where the motive is obvious, police have to be careful about what they say until they are 100% sure they have their facts straight.

@Rusty: Likewise!!!!

We could hear gunfire and sirens from Lincoln Park around 2:10 or 2:15PM. Perhaps that was when the stolen vehicle was apprehended at 17th and C SE.

Petula Dvorak filed at WaPo at 5:29 PM, with this bit of irony about the Excel Institute:

The organization recently lost a bid to manage the city's fleet of police cruisers, scooters, motorcycles and other vehicles

The school is an adult education center and the gunman, per Channel 4, was a student there...I'm sure there was some sort of motive...

Yikes. I guess he didn't his report card.

That police tape icon y'all use for these stories? That's what I actually saw when I came home from work, because he tried to escape down my street. Jesus Mary and Joseph!

This is absolutely ridiculous and can't possibly have happened. Guns are illegal in DC.

Christ on a pogo stick, that's three blocks away from me!!!

HR, he fired shots ON OUR BLOCK! and Dr. B would normally have been home then, thank goodness she's out of the country. Honestly, the "randomness" of the act, as the cop I spoke with put it, doesn't actually reassure me. And there I was, working in the rough part of Baltimore all day -- little did I know Lincoln Park was getting shot up!

HR, he fired shots ON OUR BLOCK!

What time did all this jump off?

They never mention there is a police station less than 1500 feet away from the school...

Those police stations do NOTHING but attract criminal activity. Jim Graham needs to pass emergency legislation so that police stations remain at least 10 blocks away from all schools. I am not insane.

I don't know if you are joking or being serious monkeyrotica...I'm guessing joking.

It's just a wonder the suspect got as far away as he did with the police being so close.

"They never mention there is a police station less than 1500 feet away from the school..."

He went and shot up a school 1,500 feet from a police station? What sort of genius criminal mastermind are we talking about here?

Wow, there's an Excel Institute? I wonder if they have institutes for the other Microsoft Office products as well.

"He went and shot up a school 1,500 feet from a police station? What sort of genius criminal mastermind are we talking about here?"

LOL

HR, the cop I talked to said it went down about 2:30, by the time he was at our block.
