Pope Benedict XVI's D.C. Popemobile Ride in Photos

Pope Benedict XVI took to his popemobile after meeting with President Bush at the White House this morning. The pontiff, who is celebrating his 81st birthday today, rode west beginning around noon on Pennsylvania Ave. through Washington Circle before heading north on Rock Creek Parkway before exiting at Massachusetts Ave. to arrive at the Vatican embassy. A large, enthusiastic crowd of about 10,000 gathered to cheer on the Pope as he rode by, rather swiftly we might add. People waved flags, played and sang music and held large signs welcoming Benedict to the United States. And then it was over almost as quickly as it began.

Hey, I thought we agreed no more scary clown photos!

"we love our german shepherd" -- awwww, that's cute.

is it cool to equate il popa with a dog?

the only thing Infallible about him are those cute red shoes

I saw him when he drove by at Washington Circle. That car was drove by pretty swiftly alright.

That's quite a bit of evil power in one (lead) picture.

I was at Washington Circle. It was a wonderful experience. I posted some pics to the dcist pool.

Saw him at the World Bank Building, I was rather surprised they drove by pretty slowly, around 5mph. That 10k number is a gross underestimation.

I kinda feel like the pope mobile was a little lame, i expected more than a glorified phone booth on the back of a pickup

at least when the anti-abortion kids come to town they wear those witty "I Survived Roe v. Wade" t-shirts. not looking forward to all the Papal tourists clogging up the metro with their Mass Passes tomorrow. God bless telecommuting, el Poperino!

Man, I need a popemobile. A pimped-out pink popemobile. Yeah, that'd be sweet.

Those shoes certainly are festive, but I'd hardly call them "gay." Jimmy Choo wouldn't touch those with a ten-foot Swiss guard.

He has the same wave as John McCain.

His shoes aren't gay; they're "European."

I wouldn't trust the pair of them with my old socks.

@ems73000: You're right! It's very grabby-looking.

That Pedomobile is fucking sweet.
I'll bet the kids flock to it.

"His shoes aren't gay; they're "European."

Crosstown Traffic, isn't that the same thing?

Yeah, shouldn't he be handing out icecream and playing "Pop Goes the Weasle" over the Casio loudspeaker?

He gives out Red and White Pope-sicles

I take it the people with the german shepard sign were members of the North American Man-Dog Love Association making a statement?

He gives out Red and White Pope-sicles

With cream filling, natch.

On behalf of the Nutzy Youth organization of Germany, 1940s:

SEIG HEIL, DER POPE !!

I've got yer 10-feet swiss guard right here.

There should be a TV show called "Pope My Ride" where they take beat up junkers and turn them into tricked out Popemobiles. The Swiss guards could do all the customization and show the viewers at home how they pulled it off. El Camino's are perfect candidates...just think of the possibilities!

i will get my brother to donate his el camino if he can be the first one to get his car "poped"

look at the Pope's picture! I keep imagining him chanting "Kali Ma Shakti de", and Short Round across the White House lawn shouting "Indy! Cover your heart, Cover your heart!"

My friend runs a "Question of the Day" Blog. The question from last Friday was "If you could pimp out the Popemobile, what would you add to it?"

Some of the answers are pretty hysterical.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, whenever I see the Pope in his Popemobile, I'm always reminded of the last Tic Tac in the box.

You have done well, Lord Vader.

Click your heels 3 times and repeat after me: there's no place like home.

I work at the Department of Treasury so we were "invited" to line East Executive Drive (between the White House and the Treasury) to watch the Pope drive by. Nice thing was he was moving very slowly and only 3 or 4 feet in front of us. A couple of shots here:
