Arenas Done For Playoffs, But Wizards Play On

wizards-logo.jpg Due to the unreasonable 6 p.m. start time, I missed most of Game Five last night, but I did get home in time to see Caron Butler play the hero, connecting on a tough drive with 3.9 seconds left to give the Wizards the win and bring their first round series against the Cleveland Cavaliers back to D.C. down 3-2. LeBron James attempted a contested lay-up at the buzzer that would have given the Cavs the series, but for the first time in what seems like forever, the Cavs missed a potential game-winner and the series that never ends rolls on. It will continue without Gilbert Arenas, however. Agent Zero shut it down for the remainder of the playoffs before the game, citing a pinched nerve in his knee.

In his absence, Butler returned to his early-season form, scoring 32 points, grabbing 9 rebounds and dishing out five assists. He even did a little good-natured trash talking to James before the last play. "I just told him to make the season interesting," Butler said. "Let's take it back to D.C." Game Six is Friday night at the Verizon Center.

His game winner wasn't the most graceful move he's ever done; replays showed Ben Wallace got a piece of the shot on the way up, but it got the job done. The Wizards were down five points with just over a minute and a half remaining, but scored the last six points of the game while getting stops on Cleveland's last four possessions.

“We said we had to win here to win the series," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said after the game. "So we got this one. I think we are going to play great on Friday. I’m not predicting a win but I think we are going to play great on Friday and then we bring it back here."

Don't get me wrong, I love Agent Zero, but I think we did just fine without him last night... Caron was awesome....what you missed by missing the beginning of the game was some of the worst ref'ing I've ever seen...horrible!

BTW, re: the early start time. Now we all know how folks on the West Coast feel about Monday Night Football...

I feel kind of bad for all those Cavs fans, seeing their team lose like that at home. Except for Budweiser long necks, those people have nothing but Lebron and Ilgauskas in their poor, miserable existences. I'm such a sucker for hard luck cases!

The simple fact is that Arenas is a monster, but ONLY when he's healthy. I personally believe that he should have just stayed out a lot longer when he returned in the regular season; all he did was aggravate his injuries while the rest of the team not only had to adjust to him returning, but him returning at not 100%.

In any case, I wish the Wiz luck on Friday and am sad I can't be there.

I don't like the idea of infecting the DCist forum with the back and forth of the Washington Post sports pages, but...Bob, you can kiss my Bud-drinking, Lebron-loving ass. I know your predictable tune... CLE is backwater, we drink cheap beer, we got nothing going on except for the Cavs. What else you got? Something about our limited gene pool? River of fire? Lousy schools? Municipal corruption and inept governance? Winning football team? Winning Baseball team? Winning Basketball team?

Oh yeah, I guess CLE and DC are the same except for those last 3 things.

Boom.

We have no flaming rivers in DC; polluted yes, on fire? No.

Smoke on the Water,

HR

You're right. The Cuyahoga river is much cleaner than the Anacostia.

War Cleveland.

Tough Juice and the NBA's classiest player, Antawn Jamison, have told their teammates to shut up and play. Eddie Jordan will have his team focused and ready tonight, the Wiz will force game 7 with a big win at home.

Bring in the trebuchet.
