This Week In Hip-Hop
TUESDAY:
>> Portland, Oregon-based indie soulstress Liv Warfield has been garnering positive reviews ever since the 2006 release of her debut album, Embrace Me. She'll be performing two shows at Blues Alley this evening. $20, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
>> Was (Not Was) came out of Detroit in the early 1980s with "Wheel Me Out" and scored a hit later in the decade with "Walk the Dinosaur". Recently reinvigorated, the band will bring their fusion of rock, electronic dance and jazz to the Birchmere. $35, 7:30 p.m.
WEDNESDAY:
>> Russell Taylor (pictured) first made an impression on the house track, "Fool for Love". Now he's focusing his craft more on soul. He'll be putting on two shows at Bohemian Caverns as a part of the weekly Rhythm & Soul series. $12 in advance/$15 at the door, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.
THURSDAY:
>> When El-P first made a name for himself, it was on the indie hip-hop scene of the mid- to late-90s with his group Company Flow. Now he's known for having created one of the better regarded independent labels, Definitive Jux, and work as a solo artist. The New York MC will be at the 9:30 Club along with one of the UK's lead grime artists, Dizzee Rascal, whose latest single is starting to get some play in the States. $20, 7:30 p.m.
>> The weekly "Sound of the City" event at Bohemian Caverns features live instrumentation and turntablism within a hip-hop/soul/jazz framework. Free, 8 p.m.
>> DJ Nitekrawler keeps his "Heat" dance party going. Saint-Ex will be the venue for his mix of funk, Afrobeat and disco. Free, 10 p.m.
SATURDAY:
>> If you haven't heard already, Kanye West is extremely passionate about his show. His "Glow In The Dark" tour will hit the Nissan Pavillion in Bristol, VA with notable opening acts Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D. and Rihanna. $36-$100.75, 6:30 p.m.
SUNDAY:
>> In celebration of Mother's Day, Philly-based husband and wife act Kindred the Family Soul will be at H20. $35 in advance/$45 at the door/$55 VIP (all include a complimentary dinner), 7 p.m.

Also Son of Nun is going to be at the Rock and Roll Hotel Saturday night. He goes on at 9:30.
I forgot to add that Fertile Ground will be doing 8 p.m. & 10 p.m. shows on the 10th and 11 th at Blues Alley. $25.
