About Tonight

2008_0507_tonight.jpg

MUSIC: Finnish cello-based metal band Apocalyptica are famous for playing Metallica covers, which is cool, but somehow not quite as cool as Harptallica, the two harp Metallica cover band. But Apocalyptica branched out from just Metallica long ago, and they'll perform their cello rock tonight at the 9:30 Club. $15.

MUSIC: French synthpop band The Teenagers are joined by Team Robespierre and Three Stars alum DJ Will Eastman at the Black Cat. 8 p.m., $13.

CLASSICAL: It's the final concert of the Vocal Arts Society's season. Soprano Felicity Lott and pianist Graham Johnson will give a recital at the Embassy of Austria. These long-time collaborators are leading performers of the song repertory, and the program is a knockout. Tickets: $40. 7:30 p.m.

THEATER: Tickets still remain for tonight's performance of The Screwtape Letters, the New Jersey-based Fellowship of the Performing Arts's adaptation of C.S. Lewis' novella that our reviewer raved about. Tickets are $29-$49. Many later performances have already sold out, and tonight's performance also features a post-show discussion with the actors and the director, so jump at your chance now. 7:30 p.m. at the Landsburgh Theatre, buy your tickets here.

MOVIE: The Smithsonian American Art Museum is screening the film noir classic Double Indemnity tonight at 6 p.m. in the McEvoy Auditorium. Take advantage of this free opportunity to discover the origin of lines like, "She was a tramp from a long line of tramps."

can't wait for screwtape letters

have some good box seats

was thinking rosa mexicano for dinner, any other sure date bets around there?

Double Indemnity at SAAM will be a real treat if you haven't seen it before. Fred MacMurray is super creepy, and the 30something Barbara Stanwyck - hubba hubba!

Double Indemnity is classic, mostly because of Raymond Chandler's dialog.

"I picked you for the job, not because I think you're so darn smart, but because I thought you were a shade less dumb than the rest of the outfit. Guess I was wrong. You're not smarter, Walter... you're just a little taller."

I just never believed Fred MacMurray in that role. I just can't not see the absent minded professor or the shaggy dog. I do love how in all those old film noirs, all the women were apparently always one long gaze or scotch on the rocks away from throwing themselves at some dude in a trench coat.

I know what you mean, MacMurray was the all-knowing dad on My Three Sons, which I am geezerish enough to have watched in reruns. But Double Indemnity plus The Caine Mutiny will convince you of his sleazy side.

Rosa Mexicano? Yikes! Two strikes: chain and not worth the price tag.

If you're looking for something Latin, choose nearby Cafe Atlantico (good pre-theater menu) or Oyamel instead. Poste and Rasika also have solid pre-theatre offerings in Chinatown.

And there's always Chinatown Express.

HEISINDC go to the other mexican restaurant, forgot the name but think it may a long one, and order many tapas and different glasses of wine, esp a glass of verdejo by los valdelainos. it has an incredible green apple finish instead of the usual syrupy peach typical of a rueda blanca. muchos buenos!

I could totally get behind a Double Indemnity/Son of Flubber mashup. When Professor Brainard signs a contract with Yoyodyne Research Labs to develop a Flubber/napalm hybrid, sexpot Keenan Wynn in a dress makes him an offer he can't refuse!

Hey, scotch on the rocks works on Mrs. Disco everytime!
