Weekly Music Agenda

2008_0512_BlackKeys.jpgMonday
>> The Black Keys are playing two sold out shows this week (Monday and Tuesday) at the 9:30 Club with Buffalo Killers. Their latest album, Attack & Release, was released on April 1 and produced by R&B and mash-up producer Danger Mouse. Looks like there are a few tickets for sale for both nights on Craigslist.

Tuesday
>> Colour Revolt, a southern indie rock band from Mississippi, also released an album in April titled Plunder, Beg, and Curse. You can check them and their literature-inspired lyrics out at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Snowden, The Epochs, and Bellfur. $12, 8:30 p.m.

>> Lissy Rosemont, lead singer of D.C.'s Junior League, will be stopping by Iota tonight with Arum Rae. $10, 8:30 p.m.

>> Local quartet Red Racer, will be performing their addictive pop rock stylings tonight at the Black Cat's backstage with Mother. $8, 9 p.m.

Wednesday
>> Austin-based rockers, The Midget Men, will be touring through D.C. this week off their third album, Show Pony, at the Velvet Lounge with Pup Tent and The Misguided Lemming. In line with a growing trend of earth-friendly bands and performances, they say their disc is produced with eco-friendly materials and their tour is carbon offset by MoveNeutral.com. $7, 9:30 p.m.

>> The Red and the Black is hosting another Texas band tonight. Houston's Indian Jewelry will bring their experimental, avant-guard rock to H Street with D.C.-based True Womanhood. $10.

>> Members of three of our former Three Stars (The Bonapartes, Death By Sexy, and The Third Programme) have banded together to form Cobra Collective. They'll be performing their first show at the Black Cat Wednesday night with Dennis Kane and Once Okay Twice. They describe their sound as “polit-pop-post-punk.” $8, 9 p.m.

Thursday
>> Get your metal fix for the week at the Rock and Rolll Hotel tonight with Austin-based The Sword. They'll be sharing the stage with Torche and Stinking Lizaveta. $12, 8:30 p.m.

2008_0512_ErykahBadu.jpg>> Famed R&B singer Erykah Badu will be sharing the stage at D.A.R. Constitution Hall tonight with The Roots on the second night of their two-day tour through D.C. Ticket prices are pretty steep, but they're still available. $51-76, 7:30 p.m.

Friday
>> For something different tonight, head on down to the waterfront to "Discover Sweden After Dark" at the Embassy of Sweden. The event is part of a series of cultural events that blend art, drinks and music by DJs Hej Hej and Moh Ducis. $20, 9 p.m.–12 a.m.

>> New to the Arts & Crafts label, the U.K.'s Los Campesinos! will be performing at the Black Cat tonight with Arlington-based garage rockers The Aquarium and D.C.'s Pash. $12, 9 p.m.

>> The Red and Black is hosting an evening of solo performances from some of our favorite local acts including Meredith Bragg, Ryan Walker (of The Beanstalk Library), Ryan Little (of Tereu Tereu) and Tut Tut. $8, 9 p.m.

Saturday
>> Local alt-pop rockers The Speaks (think Incubus, Foo Fighters) are headlining an early, all-ages show tonight at the 9:30 Club with Monako, Dreaming of Eden, and Vinn Fiz. $12, 6 p.m. doors.

>> Pianist Rafael Ithier may be 82 now, but he still can bang away on the piano keys. His group, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, will pack the dancefloor at The Salsa Festival 2008 at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. They will be joined by local bands Sin Miedo, Zenizia Allstar, and La Romana.

>> Emeline Michel, a Haitian folk pop singer will be at Zanzibar on the Waterfront.

Sunday
>> Three Stars and Unbuckled alums Deleted Scenes are playing the Black Cat Mainstage tonight with Bishop Allen and The War on Drugs.$12, 8 p.m. doors.

>> Beto Cuevas first established his name with his dramatic vocals for Chilean rock group La Ley. Now he's a solo artist and will be joined at the State Theatre in Falls Church by Cuban funk singer Cucu Diamantes who's best known for her warbling with Yerba Buena.

>> Bobby Blue Bland may no longer be able to hit the high notes, but his bluesy soul and soulful blues should still be impressive at the Birchmere.

>> Louisiana's Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys play Cajun, zydeco, and swamp pop sounds that is both danceable and melodic. Hum and shake at their afternoon (3:30 to 6 p.m.) appearance at the Glen Echo Park Bumpercar Pavilion, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD.

Am I the only person excited about Devotchka on Friday at 9:30? They're so good. And the lead singer is hot.

Is anyone else surprised that The Black Keys sold out consecutive nights at the 9:30? It seems like they were playing single Black Cat shows just a tour or two ago . . .

So when are the pictured Jesus Christ and the United Rubber Workers playing in D.C.?

Surprised?? Not at all. I don't think they've ever played Black Cat. They played one night at 9:30 in 2005 that if I remember correctly, was sold out. Another single night in 2006. A sold-out two-night run last year. And the same this year.

After the new album was released, i'm not surprised in the least that they sold this out.

By the way, last night's show was fantastic. Those guys still put on a hell of a show.

Don't forget Cut Copy with the Black Kids Thursday at the Cat.

Don't miss out on the band's DC area CD release party this Friday, May 16th:
