Ice Creampocalypse: Day 5 @ Dippin' Dots

Dippin' Dots: Ice Cream or not?A late, and perhaps controversial, entry into this season's frozen treats giveaways, Dippin' Dots is celebrating their 20th anniversary by giving customers a free cup of their curious beads of ice cream from 4 p.m. to close today. Invented in 1988, Dippin' Dots are touted as "scientifically advanced" due to their cryogenic-freezing process, earning them the title of "Ice Cream of the Future." They are also releasing a new, yet unsurprising, flavor: Birthday Cake.

Unfortunately, the offer is only available at franchise stores; this excludes parks, stadiums, theaters, etc... No participating locations are found within D.C., but shops can be found in Pentagon City Fashion Centre, Tysons Corner Mall, Montgomery Mall, Westfield Shoppingtown, and Dulles Town Center.

Seriously Dippin' Dots?

Wow you really are stretchin' that Ice Creampocalypse title.

Way to go DCist! Way to go!

Ugh, those are terrible! The flavor is best described as intense freezer-burn meets artificial chemical compounds. Dippin' Dots is really best restricted to children under 12 years of age.

post a day ahead of time so we can plan????

Are Dippin Dots still the ice cream of the future as envision 20 years ago?

Dippin' Dots are terrible. Epcot Center one-off perhaps, but American cultural fixture?

Step 1: Less ice cream & less flavor

Step 2: ????

Step 3: Profits

more for me!!!!!

I know Gaithersburg is considered to be practically another country by DCist readers[0], but Lakeforest Mall is participating too.

If I actually liked Dippin Dots, I'd go across the street and get some. Unfortunately, I think they taste like refrozen, freezer burned ice milk with an unhealthy dose of some sort of fake sugar mixed in for good measure.

It looks like the Wheaton Mall store is in on it too.

~EEE~

[0] I only defend it because I have to work here.

more $$$ for my dentist!! no thanks.

they taste only slightly better after they've melted

I'm waiting for some of that kickass freeze-dried astronaut ice cream for free.

I've been to the future -- and Dippin' Dots were not there.

awesome avatar, martyz. perfectly topical.
