Theft Scandal in City Finance Office: Nothing like this should surprise us anymore, right? The Examiner reports that three employees in the finance office have been fired for stealing thousands of dollars from an emergency cash fund. Cashiers in the office were paying themselves from a pool of money that is supposed to be used to help city workers whose paychecks get screwed up. D.C. Gasoline in D.C. Now Averages $4 a Gallon: AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of gasoline in the District hit $4 per gallon on Sunday, rising 10 cents since Thursday. Prices in Virginia and Maryland are still averaging under the $4 threshold, but they will likely match the figure in the next week or so.
More Than 3,000 Taxis Have Meters: That's according to Taxicab Commission Chairman Leon Swain. The figure is out of 5,700 authorized taxis currently in the District, but Swain in predicting a final week surge of installation before the June 1 deadline when $1,000 fines go into effect, reports the Post. Swain also told the paper he thinks there will be measurable number of part-time cab drivers who will decide to quit driving altogether after the deadline passes, though he declined to speculate how many that might be.
