More Hazardous Waste/E-Cycling Events Scheduled

After last weekend's overwhelming turnout and ensuing traffic disaster at the city's semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste and E-Cycling event at Carter Barron Amphitheatre, the D.C. Department of Public Works knew it had to hold these types of events more often. The department announced today that it will conduct an additional collection event this Saturday to accommodate those who did not get a chance to participate last weekend.

“Last week’s event attracted more than twice the number of people who came last year,” said DPW Director William Howland, Jr. in a statement today. “Not everyone could stay until their turn to unload their toxic items and unwanted electronic goods, so we are offering this additional collection event to apologize to residents and express our appreciation for their commitment to protecting the environment.”

The make-up event will be held this Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the RFK Stadium parking Lot 7, 2400 East Capitol St. SE.

Perhaps even more noteworthy is the announcement that beginning May 17, District residents will be able to drop off hazardous waste and expired electronics on a weekly basis every Saturday at the Benning Road Trash Transfer Station, located at 3200 Benning Road NE, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Later this summer, drop-offs will also begin at the Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station.

knowing what we know about DC and how well it's being run...ahem...i wonder what they're doing with these toxic chemicals and useless electronics? i wouldn't be half surprised to see them chuck the donations in their landfill at the end of the day or dump them in the Potomac.

Another option to get rid of old TVs and Old PCs is to post them as FREE on Craigslist. I did this a couple weeks ago and immediately got 2 people to come and get my junk Windows 98 PC and tube TV. Both were really old but worked.

that weekly pickup is HUGE news. no more giant messes like what ended up happening this last weekend. good idea, DPW!

Or you can use COSTCO's Trade-In & Recycle Program and get money for that Intel Pentium II monster you have.

Darn it!!! I wish I had read this on Friday.

But, honestly after 2+ hours in a rented car last weekend trying to drop off my 12 yr old computer, I doubt I would have done it again this past Saturday. No way did I want to drag the damn thing out again - those old machines are heavy.

Glad to hear they are planning on a regular drop off. It was impossible not to think of all the people discouraged by the lines deciding to simply toss it all in the trash and take the risk of being caught. Hopefully, this will be well advertised - one week after the decision, and this is the first I've heard of it.
