Girls to be Taught to Rock at D.C. Summer Camp

2008_0604_girlsrock.jpgDo you know a young lady between the ages of eight and 18 who'd like to spend part of her summer learning how to play thrash metal? Is there any way you think I can pass for under 18 so I can attend?

The deadline to register for Girls Rock!DC, the D.C. area's first all-girl rock camp, is this coming Monday, June 9. The camp itself runs from August 11-15, and culminates with a performance showcase on Saturday, August 16 at the 9:30 Club. D.C. metro area girls with experience levels from none to advanced are encouraged to apply for rock camp, which offers small group instruction on electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, turntables, and vocals. Campers will then form bands, collaborate to write an original song and then perform in the showcase. Tuition is $350 to $500, on a sliding scale. Financial aid and scholarships are available. Find out more about how to register here.

Don't know any eligible girls but would still like to get involved? Girls Rock!DC is also looking for volunteers to lend a hand both leading up to and during camp. Adults with skills ranging from recruitment and publicity to cooking to capable instrument teaching are asked to fill out a volunteer application though the Girls Rock! web site.

Yeah! DC does something right! you go girls!

i'm with you, sommer. i want to go. i envision disguising myself in teen costume (maybe some of those awful cheesy t-shirts with words like "brat" and, i don't know, "snarky" on them) and sneaking in. something similar to the plot line of 'bosom buddies.'

Only one word can be used to describe how I feel about this: Rock!

I wish I could volunteer to teach young ladies to beat-match and use turntables generally, but they won't let me because I'm a boy. I understand that's the right thing to do for this situation.

CRAYOLA CRAYOLA ROCK! You know you loved that song, admit it.

I totally want to do this. Can we have a grownup girls rock camp?

Why don't we just continue teaching them what all DC girls know.... get fat, get pregnant multiple times with multiple fathers, collect public assistance, bitch and complain about that assistance while smoking crack, then kill all your kids, leave them in a bath tub and sue the city for millions

GIRL POWER!

About two months ago, my daughter and I went to a fundraiser for this, which included a screening of Girls Rock! The Movie. She was absolutely blown away, as was I. Her application to Girls Rock! DC is pending.

all those adult lady rock 'n' roll dreams may come true (without having to wear any of those "brat" shirts)... there might be a ladies rock camp fundraiser to come, so keep an eye out! and check www.girlsrockdc.org for updates (you can also go there to sign up for the GR!DC newsletter to make sure not to miss anything!). ROCK ON!

Geez, Old City - cynical much?

I wouldn't say Old City is cynical as much as he's a raging misogynist who probably hasn't had a date in two decades, which given his comment makes a hell of a lot of sense.
