Severe Weather Warnings for Metro Area Until 8 p.m.

2008_0604_storm.jpgHaven't had enough of the severe weather we've been experiencing over the last several days? The National Weather Service says more of it is already upon us. A severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch have both been issued until 8 p.m. A line of storms are now approaching western Frederick, Loudoun and Fauquier counties, and will move through the metro area over the next few hours.

From the Capital Weather Gang:

The Storm Prediction Center says hail to 2 inches in diameter, thunderstorm wind gusts to 70 mph, and dangerous lightning are possible. The most likely timing for severe storms in the metro area is between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. -- although storms may continue after that time.
The worst of the storm will hit the Dulles and Herndon areas. People in those areas are being advised to move away from windows and take cover. Flash flooding is also possible.

Odds of my electricity going out (like it did last night from 9pm-4am) - 100%

The electricity has gone out in my neighborhood 4 times in the past few weeks. If I remember correctly it seems to be going out whenever there is any substantial rain.

I swear people in Baghdad have a more reliable electrical grid.

How about a DCist expose on the problem?

Wow, the sky outside of my office is dark green, and I can see the people in the opposite office looking out of their windows in fear - just like I'm doing.

The Arlington alert is kind of hilarious. Someone needs to settle down with the CAPS lock.
TAKE COVER NOW!

Have I mentioned how much I love a good thunderstorm?

This one actually knocked out the power in my office for a split second. If only it had knocked it out for the rest of the day!

Dark green skies followed by torrential downpours and incredible winds - moved through incredibly quickly. We went downstairs to watch it come up M Street, saw plenty of people like Bethesdaist up in the neighboring buildings, anyway. :-P

Maybe it's an old wives tale, but I always heard that green skies mean torandoes. Watch out Bethesdaist...wherever you are.

Kinda cool when the office building opposite you just completely blacks out while you're looking at it.

Dark and whipping rain in Tysons at the moment. Pretty damned cool.

I have to admit that I think storms like today's are beautiful, as long as I'm inside when they happen. I hate being in a car or just plain walking outside when they happen. But safe at home or with an awesome view of the show? Great!

But then I think I'm in the minority (surprise!) on this one.

aww snap. looks like i'm on poo watch tonight. the puppeh hates it when it's thundering and doesn't like to use the loo outside.

Green skies are common with really bad weather... doesn't always mean a tornado though.

I love me some Arlington Alerts...what with their TAKE COVER NOW! and their Rapid Foxes. Did anyone see that one and then of course the correction that followed shortly thereafter?

I'm wondering if DC metro just had a derecho hit. Green skies, violent thunderstorms, heavy winds and tons of lightning. I saw one hit once while I was in college in Syracuse and it was the same type of still air with a green sky right before the storm hit. Sadly, I was not enjoying the same, um, herbal remedies for this storm as I was back then.

That's one reason I love living in my part of the city - underground power lines! Of course, that doesn't mean the transformer won't be hit by lightning...

I love watching these storms roll in. My office used to be in One Dupont Circle with a view straight up 20th Street - very cool! Unfortunately we moved to 20th and M in the middle of the block with no view. Poop.

AMDCer - That's why we went down to the corner at 20th and M...until the sky decided to make that a less-than-good idea...

here's an idea, sommer. we don't know when now is. this is where it would be nice if dcist would include a time stamp for when things are posted (like how blogspot does).

It's very ugly outside. Very dark greenish skies. Strong winds. Lots of lightning. Good thing we're not in Kansas anymore.

surrender, dorothy!

Hopefully this is ok - lots of eye-witness reports and more timely discussion of the storm here.

teddy - I was at syracuse for the labor day derecho as well... but save for when the lightning turned night into day, the sky definitely wasn't green... it was 1 AM and it was regular ol' dark night when the storm came rolling in... chalk it up to the herbal remedies, eh?

I enjoy the ozonated air after a storm until some
fool lights up a cigarette.

(that said, the "bow echo" that CWG says is passing through the area right now is, in fact, associated with derechos...)

It got pretty bad on the Hill - the Main Reading Room of the Library of Congress (in the Jefferson Building) just closed due to storm damage - they evacuated it a few minutes ago. But no one (at least in the Madison building) really knows what the damage is.

since i have no idea what these meteo kids are talking about here, i provide this definition as a public service.

(PSUmark: i assume you went to penn state's meteorology department. i was on the floors below in the geography department, and we always marveled at the level of nerdiness on the floors above us.)

Oh no, not happy to hear the main reading room of the Jefferson Building has storm damage! It is one of our city's architectural treasures, and I hope none of the books or artworks inside got wet.

Ugh, Orange line is terminating at East Falls Church metro. Grrrr.

Yep, that was a doozy.

IMGoph - Nope, I was an IST major, but this kind of stuff has always intrigued/fascinated me.

well then, PSUMark, that's a damn fine bridge/building y'all IST folk have over atherton there...

tenacious b - totally.
