(PSUmark: i assume you went to penn state's meteorology department. i was on the floors below in the geography department, and we always marveled at the level of nerdiness on the floors above us.)

It got pretty bad on the Hill - the Main Reading Room of the Library of Congress (in the Jefferson Building) just closed due to storm damage - they evacuated it a few minutes ago. But no one (at least in the Madison building) really knows what the damage is.

teddy - I was at syracuse for the labor day derecho as well... but save for when the lightning turned night into day, the sky definitely wasn't green... it was 1 AM and it was regular ol' dark night when the storm came rolling in... chalk it up to the herbal remedies, eh?

A line of storms are now approaching western Frederick, Loudoun and Fauquier counties, and will move through the metro area over the next few hours. here's an idea, sommer. we don't know when now is. this is where it would be nice if dcist would include a time stamp for when things are posted (like how blogspot does).

That's one reason I love living in my part of the city - underground power lines! Of course, that doesn't mean the transformer won't be hit by lightning... I love watching these storms roll in. My office used to be in One Dupont Circle with a view straight up 20th Street - very cool! Unfortunately we moved to 20th and M in the middle of the block with no view. Poop.

I'm wondering if DC metro just had a derecho hit. Green skies, violent thunderstorms, heavy winds and tons of lightning. I saw one hit once while I was in college in Syracuse and it was the same type of still air with a green sky right before the storm hit. Sadly, I was not enjoying the same, um, herbal remedies for this storm as I was back then.

I have to admit that I think storms like today's are beautiful, as long as I'm inside when they happen. I hate being in a car or just plain walking outside when they happen. But safe at home or with an awesome view of the show? Great! But then I think I'm in the minority (surprise!) on this one.

Dark green skies followed by torrential downpours and incredible winds - moved through incredibly quickly. We went downstairs to watch it come up M Street, saw plenty of people like Bethesdaist up in the neighboring buildings, anyway. :-P

Odds of my electricity going out (like it did last night from 9pm-4am) - 100% The electricity has gone out in my neighborhood 4 times in the past few weeks. If I remember correctly it seems to be going out whenever there is any substantial rain. I swear people in Baghdad have a more reliable electrical grid. How about a DCist expose on the problem?
