DCist: Storm Causes Metro Delays, Power Outages

I was one of thousands of people delayed yesterday at East Falls Church and without cell phone service. Unfamiliar with the station, as most seemed to be, it was a royal mess! Understanding the difficulties that come with managing an unexpected emergency, yesterday gave me a scary look into the lack of attention this over-crowded region has devoted to emergency planning. It made me wonder what kind of chaos would arise from any type of evacuation, let alone another minor emergency like yesterday (minor is now an understatment, as yesterday's bad management created a major problem)!

Wow, I've never seen disaster preparedness spam from a generator seller before. Nice new niche you've scouted out for yourself, there . . . My office is so full of wimps . . . one little momentary power blink and they sent everyone home at 3. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

Blackouts, Disasters, Hurricanes, Tornados, Wind Storms. We’ve all seen the after-effects, entire communities without power. I’ve read that on average 3.5 million people lose their power in the US each week! We just bought a generator from MainPowerConnect.com that now will ensure our family has the power needed when faced with these unexpected outages. With back-up power, our home now stays well lighted, secure, keeping our food cold and fresh and our air conditioning working. Our generator will also keep the sump pump running protecting our basement from flooding.

My Verizon phone is working, but I know several other people have been having problems with theirs. I wonder if there is any chance of there being power when I get home (to Alexandria). I was going to eat cereal for dinner anyway, but I don't have any clean pants for work tomorrow...
