This Week in Jazz

Will Rast>> Local saxophonist Stan Killian returns to Twins Jazz tonight along with pianist Harry Appleman, bassist Eric Wheeler, and drummer Eric Kennedy. Call 202-234-0072 for set time and cover information.

>> Trumpeter Terence Blanchard must consider D.C. a second home. Last year we saw him play here twice, and this Thursday he returns to Blues Alley to start a four night run of daily 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets are $27.50 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Thursday is your chance to break out the zoot suit and wingtips for the Squirrel Nut Zippers show at the Birchmere. 7:30 p.m. $25

>> D.C. native and current student at Berklee, drumming phenom Cameron Outlaw leads his group this Thursday at Twins Jazz. Call 202-234-0072 for set time and cover information.

>> The wonderful Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center will celebrate its 11th anniversary with a free performance by The Manhattan Transfer, the virtuosic quartet of jazz singers that's been swingin' for over 30 years. It's sure to be a packed house, so arrive early. 6 p.m. Free

>> On Friday night, Jazz Night in Southwest hosts a tribute to legendary singer Nat King Cole featuring pianist/vocalist Joe Birden. 6 to 9 p.m. $5

>> It's a great weekend for local music over at Bohemian Caverns. On Friday, the recently profiled Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra will play at the historic venue and Three Stars alum Thad Wilson will lead his quartet on Saturday. Tickets to the 9 and 11 p.m. sets are $15.

>> Head down to Twins Jazz on Sunday to see the Rob Muncy Octet, which features Lena Seikaly on vocals, Joe Herrera on trumpet, Nathan Lincoln-Decusatis on piano, Anthony Pirog on guitar, Kevin Pace on bass, Dennis Hoffman on drums and Brad Linde on saxophone. This is some of the finest young talent this city has to offer. Call 202-234-0072 for set time and cover information.

>> On Monday, local bluesman and Grammy nominee Tom Principato plays 8 and 10 p.m. sets at Blues Alley. Tickets are $20 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

>> Blues Alley is the place to be next Tuesday, as Three Stars alum Will Rast (pictured) leads his smokin' 11-piece groove band, Funk Ark through 8 and 10 p.m. sets. The band features some of the city's finest talent, including Three Stars alum Matt Rippetoe and Fugazi's Jerry Busher. Tickets are $18 + $12.50 minimum/surcharge.

Re: Terence Blanchard, don't forget he was also part of the Monterey Jazz 50th anniversary tour concert at the Center For the Arts at George Mason earlier this year as well. (Great show.)
