District Cooling Centers Opened

2008_0606_summersun.jpgIt's hot, and it's going to get much, much hotter over the weekend. Hot enough that the District Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency opened its cooling centers for the first time this year today, from noon until 6 p.m.

An Alert DC message sent around earlier points those needing a place to cool off to these locations:

  • The Reeves Building at 2000 14th St. NW
  • Judiciary Square at 441 4th St. NW
  • The King Building at 3720 MLK Jr. Ave. SE
  • The Williams Center at 920 Rhode Island Ave. NE

Nothing says "summer in DC" quite like District buildings full of clammy, sweaty people. Wouldn't be the same without them. Like the pidgeons in front of the Doge's Palace in Venice, only stinkier.

Do people really use these places? Isn't this why god invented malls and movie theaters and air conditioning?

Ummmmmm. No cooling centers in SW? How about the DMV office? I know it gets really heated in there but ...

Cooling centre?! Fuck this. People survived, rich and poor, just fine sans AC for over 2000 years.

People live in SW???? I thought the only thing they had there were male go-go boys, drag queens (https://www.washblade.com/2008/5-16/news/localnews/12578.cfm) , and an overpriced baseball stadium?

If you're white, not on benefits and value your life, don't go here.

@Loganmo - That's right!! My left leg is christmas. My right leg is new years. Why don't you come visit me between the holidays?

welles - Actually, no. Uncounted thousands died from heat stroke just a few years back. But they're French so they don't count.

Lots of people live in SW. And the baseball stadium is not in SW.

welles: what could possibly be wrong with anything that's next to jimmie muscatello's uniforms and mafioso villa...

I know I'm totally late on this tip, but I'm not hep like you kids. BUT: if you want the "cleanest air in the city" go to the National Gallery of Art! The air is "scrubbed" so that the paintings do suffer wear and tear. It's cool, refreshing, and you might see something neat.
