is anyone else disturbed by the similarities between tangysweet.com and pinkberry.com? the logos' fonts are the same; the photos of the toppings are the same. i don't think they're related? i don't know much about copyright law but yikes.

Philly water ice? Thats awesome! It makes me feel like home to see Rita's Water Ice (back home it's Rita's Wooder Ice...) moving towards DC, with locations in Odenton and Laurel. But a place that makes steaks with Amoroso rolls? You made my day, Monkeyerotica

Forget custard and frogurt. All the cool kids get their Slurpee headache fix at the Philadelphia Water Ice Factory. And their cheesesteaks are on Amoroso rolls. Anyone from South Philly will know what this means.

I was at a red mango franchise in NYC over memorial day, and the highlights--I dunno if it counts as a difference--are these: Only a couple of flavors of frozen yogurt, which is not faux ice cream. Toppings such as sprinkles, almonds, raspberries, mango, blueberries, etc. I found it good, and not too expensive. YMMV.

I, too, lived through the first frozen-yogurt invasion of the 1970s and 80s. It wasn't good then, and it won't be good now. I'll stick with Rita's frozen custard, which may have more calories, but is sweet rather than "tangy."

oh, tcby, how i loved thee. and as a wee college student, i actually believed that tcby would not add an ounce of weight to my body and would in fact counteract all the poor-quality beer calories i ingested. clearly the tcby in my college town was early on the cursed sprinkles bandwagon - i still believe yogurt without cursed sprinkles is calorie free. any chance that curse would involve term or ridiculousness limits on dc commissioners?

Yeah, Eddie's got it. This stuff has that tangy/sour taste of plain yogurt. But it's frozen and smooth like soft ice cream.

According to Aaron Gordon, who gave me a short history of the trend, people had previously tried to bring frozen yogurt from Italy before the TCBY craze in the 70's. It failed. During its resurgence, TCBY and others tried to make the yogurt more palatable by trying to make it taste like ice cream. This trend is a tad different in that it tries to keep the yogurt somewhat intact.

Other than the fancier styling, how are these places any different from the TCBY franchises which spread all over the country in the 1970s and then mostly died?
