Virginians: Don't Forget to Vote
Come on, Commonwealth. The Post is reporting that just about nobody is showing up to vote in today's congressional primaries in the 11th District. It's a pretty big race, with Rep. Tom Davis leaving his long-held office and four Democrats vying for the nomination. But people seem to be suffering from election-lag after the months-long primary season. Don't be discouraged; poling places are open until 7 p.m.
The 11th District is one that carries a lot of weight; it's the wealthiest voting district in the country, and helped carry Sen. Jim Webb and Gov. Tim Kaine to their respective victories. As a Virginia resident, I must admit that I didn't know there was an election happening today. There hasn't been much promotion in my mailbox or on my phone during dinner or at every major intersection. Turns out, I'm just outside of the borders of the 11th. If you're an eligible voter, make a civic pit stop at your polling place on the way home from work tonight. Judging by current turnout, it won't take you very long.

If you want to pick a candidate for the 11th based on traffic and transit issues, here's an overview of their positions. Connolly is generally better on development around Metro and not creating even more sprawl. Of course, there are many other issues that matter in Congress.
One of my biggest beefs with the Commonwealth is that there is nothing coming from the state or local government informing voters of the upcoming election. At least in California you get a sample ballot a month before the election with all the candidates for each office and any ballot initiatives. In many ways I think the Commonwealth attempts to suppress voter turnout by not being more proactive and informative.
