Electricity is Back, Metro Stations Reopen

2008_0613_metrocenter2.jpgThe electricity is back on! Traffic was more or less flowing normally through downtown just after 11 a.m. Pepco reports that power has now been restored to the entire affected area.

Metro reopened the Dupont Circle station at 10:50 a.m., and service at Metro Center was being restored just after 11 a.m. when we stopped by to check things out. The station was still darker than normal but customers were being allowed in and out, and we saw a train pull up to the platform.

The power outage lasted for about three hours during the morning commute, roughly from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Metro says customers can expect major delays to continue on the Red line for the rest of the morning. Fire department officials were still at Metro Center. Don't ride the Red line for a while -- delays of one hour or more are still being reported.

So who set the 2 fires?

    Jason Voorhees

    Actually, it was Jason's mother.

    a harkonnen, i'd wager

why was the power out? was that written somewhere and I missed it?

nevermind, I don't read closely enough

Do we have to stop drinking now?

I'm gonna keep drinking. But I need to clear up something. Do I focus my drunken ranting on Metro or Pepco? And would the other be the not-so-hot girl I hook up with at the end of the night?

    Let the hangover begin.

I loved how my bus tore through the traffic lights this morning. She would do her "hollywood stop" at the broken light, then plow through the intersection, honking at all the other cars. It worked. Everyone got out of the way and we cruised to work.

    AWW maan!

    *takes off his hocky mask*

It was a sand worm that lost its way looking for spiiiiiice.

Actually I have no idea what sandworms look for, but they create a lot of damage while they're doing it.

    Dear Metro,
I want my money back today please.
    Fuck you very much,
    Stinkeye

WMATA should shackle those sandworms into the construction of new metro rail tunnels.

So, for the thousands of us who couldn't use our smartcards when exiting the stations this morning, what are we going to do when we have to get back on the Metro? If we all have to go to the Station Managers to get our cards cleared, it's going to cause havoc during Rush Hour.

    Robert, from the WaPo article:

"During the outage, commuters at the affected stations were allowed to pass through the turnstiles without paying. Those who entered the Metro system through a working turnstile and exited through one that was out of service may need to have their Farecards adjusted by a station manager when they return for the trip home, Metro spokesman Steven Taubenkibel said, creating the potential for long lines during the evening commute."

In the words of the immortal Steve Buckhantz:

    "DAGGER!"

    @connie dobbs:

Sandworms look for parking in Adams Morgan. However, they don't have hands, so instead of videotaping illegal parkers they get very frustrated and destroy anything that vibrates.

I think a certain store on Connecticut should be very afraid.

(TinyURL link is to a google maps page. Safer for work than DCist posts about nude biking.)

I, for one, welcome our new metro-saboteur pyromaniac, Frank-Herbert-reading CHUD overlords.

Cool. Now I can go back to using "riding the Red Line" as a euphemism for that "monthly visit from Aunt Flo."

Metro just issued this e-mail alert:

"Customers who exited unprocessed due to this morning's delays may re-enter the system with their SmarTrip/farecards during PM rush. The faregates are reprogrammed and only the afternoon trip will
    be charged."

Damn you Wellington Yueh, you and your trickery, betraying House WMATA!

For once.... MARC trains are outperforming Metro this week. Waiting for my ride from Odenton to Union Station, the track manager proudly stated over the speakers: "Only 4 minutes late today! Happy Friday!"

    How far we've fallen.
