Metro Center Closed Due to Second Fire

    2008_0613_metrocenter.jpgDogs and cats, living together!

A second fire at the Metro Center station has now forced that station to close as well. At 9:50 a.m. another fire was reported at the station on the tracks headed in the direction of Shady Grove. An earlier fire was reported around 7:20 a.m. and caused delays of up to 1 hour on the Red line in both directions.

Way ahead of ya, sister. Three fingers of rye really takes the edge off my morning cup of Postum.

    Guinness for everyone!

friday the 13th = drink 'til you drop.

Start drinking? pshaw! I've been drinking since the power went out as I couldn't bear the idea of my frozen margarita popsicles going to waste. Besides, if anything is going to suck today, it's going to be me. harumph. *crosses arms and walks away*

clearly, metro has been getting its divine comeuppance this week for prohibiting rapture...

    http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/06/12/crumbling.cities.ap/index.html

    Pot meet Kettle...

I think the Devil is pissed off because y'alls compared him to MD drivers, which is totally unfair to Satan. So, technically, this is all Jim Graham's fault.

MD drivers are far more like Ba'al anyways.

    begin? . . . how about continue?

    We got to pray!

    PRAY!

    Pray!

    PRAY!

We got to pray just to make it today!

MC Hammer never spoke truer words.

Does this mean the Orange/Blue lines are impacted (i.e. going through Metro Center). Love how WMATA doesn't see fit to announce that, too. And also love how while waiting for my train the biggest announcements are the elevator outages. The three people this impacts can ask a station manager.

    hmph.
no electricity = no ice for the absinthe dripper.
.....so maybe it IS the apocalypse?

So if Dupont Circle AND Metro Center are closed, is Farragut North being overwhelmed??

Welcome to the metropocalypse, special Friday the 13th edition! Next up, frogs raining from the sky and the Potomac River turning to chianti.

I got stuck on a train this morning and some man did a poop on my shoe. It was very gross.

    The curse continues!

Hopefully it won't be for 86 years, like the Red Sox.

There can never be enough Ghost Busters references. Thanks.

Cranky - Your prayer is also cursed.

Also, the chair is not my son.

just an FYI - my best friend in Chicago just IMed me to let me know DC's on the news there because of this insanity.

    holy hell.

call me when the mass hysteria begins, I want in on that action

The power outage made the Drudge Report. Even the White House is working on backup power sources. Which probably means all the souls that Sith Lord Cheney has captured and enslaved.

We got to pray just to make it today!

MC Hammer never spoke truer words.

Actually, Hammer also had some very wise and honest words about liking "'em soft and wet." But I guess that doesn't really apply here.

why the hell haven't we lost power here at NGS?!? i want to participate in the unholy hell that is today

I want to say that I have been very lucky with regard to metro delays this week but I will not. Let me be clear that I am not saying whether I have or have not been lucky.

Way ahead of ya, sister. Three fingers of rye really takes the edge off my morning cup of Postum.

Are there any bars in DC featuring Banana Colonics on their happy hour for this fine Friday the 13th?

Just to let you know the palfreys are still running people in and out of the city

I shall now usher in a new Reich of Anarchy by recklessly looting the supply cabinet.

Alas, my frigging office building seems to be the only one with power in the Greater Chinatown Area. Was SO hoping to be able to turn around and walk back home.

We are all going to die.

    Skynet has taken over.

    from Washington Post online

"The Spy museum on 9th Street NW was among many places that were closed while the power was out-- "You can't spy in the dark," quipped Benta Davis, a museum gate attendant who was standing outside to pass the time."

This woman would make a terrible spy.

Farragut North is being overwhelmed . . . by fire trucks and the press. Trains coming in from Shady Grove are terminating there.

and 3 pedestrians were hit by cars, sayeth the post.

were the drivers from DC, MD, or VA?

    i report, y'all decide.

voteprime - After my free tango lesson, I'm going to top it off with a smooth, refreshing colonic.

"Do you like pina colonics... getting caught in the rain... passing out in the ocean..."

Instead of "Metro Opens Doors" their new slogan should be "Metro Closes Stations Because They're on Fire and Leaves You in the Dark to Fend for Yourselves with Your Cellphone Flash Against the CHUDs, Morlocks, and Hollow Earth Creatures."

Well I finally made it to the office but virtually no one's here. Does this mean I can go home? Hmmm, what are the rules here?

    Also, ITTTTTTTTTTT'S PEEEEEEEEEOPLE!

Considering the apocalyptic calamity that a "sick passenger" tends to cause on Metro, I figured this little event would've made World War II look like a field of humping bunny-rabbits and laughing children with rainbows streaming out of their godforsaken eyes...

    Where was the Kaboom?
There was supposed to be an earth-shaking Kaboom...

I said it once and I said it before...CHUDS

take any definition of chud you want...

    I'll say it again*

Our city is broken. Recommend we get a new one.

    @rsplatpc

The Spy museum on 9th Street NW..

You have to wonder how the wax museum handles a day without A/C. A tribute to the many moods of Jabba the Hutt?

that post article also described the scene on one street downtown "like a Carnival". I just hope those office secretaries were not dressed like the Brazilians during Carnival.

Unless they meant an American carnival...I do wonder whether anyone had a hot hand in the dice game! Clickety Clack!

@bargainbasementbaby: Did you say that a guy defecated openly in the Metro car and it landed on your foot? Oh.My.G0D. Was his a$$ in full view? That's the nastiest thing I've heard all day!

And, a terrible reminder of the one time I rushed into one of those rear seats on a Metro car (y'kno, the ones with a half-glass partition?) and as I flopped into the seat I had the gruesome sensation of feces oozing into my open-toe sandals.

Someone had found a quiet spot to relieve themselves and didn't even have the decency to cover it with a newspaper. heebeegeebeeheebeegeebeeheebeegeebee!!!!

Yep, everyone thinks this is pretty funny... but doesn't it bother you that year by year, our infrastructure becomes more fragile? More blackouts, more transportation delays, more potholes? The proper response in a nation that cares about the future would be outrage, not irony. I'm a bit older than most of you (I'm guessing), and trust me... stuff like this didn't happen as often 20 years ago.

jm67, some of us young'ins grew up around here. Trust me, we know this isn't normal.

    Red Warrior, shot the food.

    JM67,

Not only are most of us used to it, but even for the ones that are transients here - if you di
