Butterfield 9 Closes
After rumblings and hints over the weekend, the Washingtonian's Todd Kliman confirmed today that Butterfield 9 will be closing after eight years. Kliman hints at strife between the ownership and Chef Michael Harr, while another source points the finger at financial hardships. With the economy as it is, today's newest closing probably won't be the last. Harr, a D.C.-area native, hopes to stay in the city, but with fewer openings and more closings, options look short.

Oh man that sucks. I wish I'd had some notice, I would have eaten there one last time.

It seems to me that the landlords along 14th street need to realize that the center of gravity for downtown has shifted way east of them. Seriously, Red Sage was still serving a ridiculous number of diners before they had to close because of a rent hike. Who the hell do they think will be able to do better with that space? Granted it's a huge space, but I don't know what other tenant could do any better.

I've eaten at Butterfield. It was ok, but kinda pricey. I prefer more haute cuisine like Five Guys. Or the chicken fingers basket at Good Guys.
