Explosion Planned

AlertDC says a dynamite explosion is scheduled for 2 p.m. at 23rd and Constitution Ave. NW, where a building is set to be demolished. Any idea what building that could possibly be? If memory serves nearly that whole intersection is just baseball diamonds. No streets will need to be closed as a result of the demolition, according to the announcement. If you head down there with a camera, be sure to submit your photos to the DCist Pool.

That's across from the Lincoln Memorial. And the State Department. I'm sure Condi's thrilled to hear explosions outside her window.

Not sure what they're demolishing, but that area has been a construction zone.

The only thing over there is the State Dept buildings, unless they're planning on demolishing the Vietnam Memorial, but I somehow think that isn't part of the plan. Now the Federal Reserve is just a couple blocks away...I'm just sayin'.

No road closures and doing it in the middle of the day probably means it is subterranean and nothing more than a boom and a little vibration....nothing to see here move along.

No, there are also a couple of association there (Nat'l Library Ass'n?), and the Navy occupies the land across the street from State.

I certainly hope they aren't planning on blowing up my softball team's permitted field. Squatting for the rest of the year would not be a fun time.

It's the Pharmaceutical Assoc. of America or something like that.

American Pharmacists Association, maybe?

Something to do with American Pharmacists, it is between Main State and Constitution...I reckon it is that cuz they are doing construction all around it.

Not to be mistaken by the flagellant explosion that come out of George Jr's mouth.

It's actually the US Institute of Peace, according to the announcements we've received here at the State Department. Yesterday before the blasting, they warned us over the building loudspeakers.

They're blowing up the institute of peace?
That seems perfectly fitting for this administration.

Awesome! The Peace Freaks are blowing shit up!

It's been three minutes... how was it??! Instant news on the Internet, my ass!

as much as the Fed sucks, please don't blow it up. my brother works there.

Not a building just blowing up dirt to build a parking garage at the construction site on the northwest corner of 23rd and constitution. Basically just a noise that is comparable to a garage door closing and then the ground vibrates for half a second. Fairly underwhelming.

It's the Pharmaceutical Assoc. of America or something like that.

Yeah, those basement meth labs do have a habit of going kerboom on you. Kinda like the stills at the Association of American Distillers. It was probably those telltale "beer clouds" that caused that double rainbow. And there never was any "Beer Baron."

So is that construction over by the Kennedy Center the Institute of Peace?

I guess we should be glad that they didn't do it yesterday when there was a gas leak at 23rd and F.

it's the construction site on the north side of constitution. If you look at the google maps of the site, it is just a large parking lot. That large parking is now a large hole that was just made larger at 2PM.

It kinda shook the ground when I was about 2 blocks away so I thought it was fairly cool

uh too late to chip in...but anyway: It's just a construction site. I hate that intersection...no side walk on 23rd street on the construction side and they make you cross half way and...yea a little bitter =\

Anyone else amazed that an Association (the Pharmaceutical one) gets such an august site on the mall for their building? It always gets mistaken for a fed agency or something. Although, I 'm sure their lobbyists have probably elevated them to special status beyond mere mortals anyway.
