>> Hirshhorn After Hours is back tonight, kicking off at 8 p.m. Advanced ticket sales are over, but you can still try to get there early enough to pay $12 at the door before it sells out. Tonight's After Hours marks the opening of The Cinema Effect, Part II: Realisms, which features 19 film, video and digital artists that examine two main topics: the global effect of Hollywood, and the documentation of history. Catch a film screening of Jeremy Deller’s The Battle of Orgreave at 9:30 p.m., and Artur Zmijewski’s Repetition at 10:30 p.m. in the Ring Auditorium. Don't miss DJ People’s Champion at 10 p.m.

>> Tonight and Saturday, New York based flautist Jamie Baum leads Timepiece through 9 and 11 p.m. sets at Twins Jazz. A faculty member at the renowned Manhattan School of Music, Baum has served as a Jazz Ambassador for the State Department and has topped critics' polls in premiere jazz publications. Tickets are $15.

>> Born to a Romanian Gypsy mother and Nigerian father in Germany, Ayo has garnered worldwide attention for her folksy and soulful acoustic guitar playing, which is prominent on her debut release, Joyful. Her special seated 9:30 Club show will also feature Three Star alumna Wayna. $15, 8 p.m.

>> Locals Mello-D & the Rados have been called one of the best hip-hop bands around and will be celebrating the release of their album, Antitainment Vol. 2: Truth, Lies, Etc. Joining them at the Velvet Lounge will be frequent collaborator, Bomani. $10, 9 p.m.

SATURDAY:

>> Word has quickly spread among the local food blogosphere of the resurrection of brew pops at Rustico, thanks to an amendment of one of Virginia's alcohol laws. Starting today, head over to the Old Town restaurant for the icy treat in framboise, cherry kriek, peche, cassis, banana, plum, and chocolate stout, at $5 a pop. They'll be available through September.

>> Need more beer? The Northern Virginia Summer Brewfest is this weekend in Leesburg. Running 11 a.m.-9 p.m. today and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on Sunday, tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate per day.

>> Feeling like an excursion? Head to Art Whino's new space at National Harbor, where they’ll be celebrating International Surfing Day from noon to midnight with live music, live painting, and all ages arts and environmental awareness activities. At 6 p.m., the gallery hosts an opening reception for RIPPLE: Art Effecting Oceans, a solo show for California’s Erik Abel, which will also feature the work of five artists new to Art Whino. >> The Fête de la Musique at the Maison Francaise celebrates the summer solstice with a packed schedule of music performances in the gardens between 5 and 10 p.m.; Online tickets are sold out, but you can try your luck at paying $10 at the gate.

>> Loads of DJs (including a set from LCD Sound System) and a live performance by those lovable dudes in The Dance Party are all at the 9:30 Club, courtesy Blisspop and BYT. $15, 9 p.m.

SUNDAY:

>> Vocalist Alice Russell has earned a reputation as one of the finest vocalists in the UK. Able to leap genres ranging from gospel to jazz, her vocal abilities are a perfect vehicle for her original material. Russell will play 7 and 9 p.m. sets at Bohemian Caverns this Sunday. Tickets are $15.

>> Still haven't been down to the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Celebrating the Lucelia Artists Awards exhibit? Today is your last chance. SAAM is open from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., and admission is free.

>> Take the kids to the Freer and Sackler Galleries for a 2 p.m. performance of Taiwanese Puppet Theater, as well as a pre-performance gallery tour of Yellow Mountain.
