Did you catch the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals on Saturday Friday? The annual event was held at the Grand Hyatt Washington over the weekend, and 13-year-old Sameer Mishra of Indiana took home top honors, which includes a $30,000 cash prize from Scripps, a $2,500 U.S. Savings Bond and a complete reference library from Merriam-Webster, a $5,000 cash prize from Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation, and a reference library worth $3,800 from Encyclopedia Britannica. That's quite a haul.
Via DCeiver, check out this classic bit of spelling bee video where earlier on in the final round, Mishra briefly believes he has actually been asked to spell the word "numbnut." Stick through to the post-game analysis where he explains that his concern had been that "numbnut" has many different possible spellings. Best National Spelling Bee champion ever?

Car Pushed Into Anacostia River By Train

i guess i never would have been able to slip "numbnut" into a geography bee question.
I think I met ebonygentleman79 on match.com a couple of years ago. Weird date.
So that's why there were so many socially awkward home-schooled kids in suits and dresses on the metro the other night.
you have to feel a bit sorry for the runner up.
the kid who wins draws these for his final three:
taleggio
esclandre
guerdon
the kid who comes in second draws these:
Kulturkampf
introuvable
prosopopoeia
I watched the bee finale (who says I have no life?). I thought the kid was asked to spell numbnut as well. That would have been cool.
The runner up kid is like 13 and wants to be a neurosurgeon when he grows up. At 13, all I was interested was making it to second base with a girl.
I'm guessing no one caught them on Saturday because the finals were Friday night. So, uhm, way to not even check out the Scripps web site, which says right at the top May 29 and 30.
