- Orange line trains are terminating at East Falls Church after power lines fell on both tracks between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church stations at about 3:30 p.m., WTOP is reporting. Metro will provide a free shuttle bus in both directions. Power is also out at the Georgia Ave./Petworth Metro station, though Green and Yellow line trains continue to run and the station is still open. There's no indication yet when these outages will be fixed, so expect the evening rail commute to be as messed up as the one on the roads.
- Big time power outages throughout the Metro region. Pepco's web site says 126,254 customers are without power in D.C. and Maryland as of 4:30 p.m., and Dominion Power says a whopping 239,231 are without power in Northern Virginia.
- We're hearing that a tornado did indeed touch down in Falls Church.

reason #345 why metro should always be built underground
except we have to worry about the C.H.U.D.s taking total control of the system then...
Methinks Verizon might be having issues as well because it's been painful to send text messages of late.
My Verizon phone is working, but I know several other people have been having problems with theirs.
I wonder if there is any chance of there being power when I get home (to Alexandria). I was going to eat cereal for dinner anyway, but I don't have any clean pants for work tomorrow...
TORNAPOCALYPSE!
Also, Washington Street is closed around Duke. That will make the ride home real fun.
Trees are down in several places on the GW parkway.
Blackouts, Disasters, Hurricanes, Tornados, Wind Storms. We’ve all seen the after-effects, entire communities without power. I’ve read that on average 3.5 million people lose their power in the US each week! We just bought a generator from MainPowerConnect.com that now will ensure our family has the power needed when faced with these unexpected outages. With back-up power, our home now stays well lighted, secure, keeping our food cold and fresh and our air conditioning working. Our generator will also keep the sump pump running protecting our basement from flooding.
At least every major network in town has been broadcasting about it all afternoon.
Wow, I've never seen disaster preparedness spam from a generator seller before. Nice new niche you've scouted out for yourself, there . . .
My office is so full of wimps . . . one little momentary power blink and they sent everyone home at 3. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.
tornapocalypse?
i vote for "tornadicane"
couldn't agree more with DGrad, its worth it in the long run.
I was one of thousands of people delayed yesterday at East Falls Church and without cell phone service. Unfamiliar with the station, as most seemed to be, it was a royal mess! Understanding the difficulties that come with managing an unexpected emergency, yesterday gave me a scary look into the lack of attention this over-crowded region has devoted to emergency planning. It made me wonder what kind of chaos would arise from any type of evacuation, let alone another minor emergency like yesterday (minor is now an understatment, as yesterday's bad management created a major problem)!
