Adherents of the Falun Gong spiritual discipline protested in Washington today against the 2008 Olympic Games set to be held in Beijing, China. I'm not surprised at all about students SSNs being mailed out. A few years ago the University was supposed to be making this huge switch so that SSNs wouldn't be used at all except for admissions and employment. So much for that.

The one saving grace is that students were mailed their own SSNs, as opposed to, say, being published online. I guess the only people you'd have to worry about are postal workers and people snooping through your mail (although, that's true any time personal information is sent through the mail).

They should've played White Punks on Dope. It was still a good parade though. Catchy uniforms.

Re: Farmer's Market addendum

"The watermelons and cantaloupe will be on sale for $6.00 per lb., and the blackberries are $5.00. Each. Enjoy!"

Seriously, my concern for "food miles" and supporting local farmers quickly disappears when I realize their prices are o.u.t.r.a.g.e.o.u.s.

(This goes for Eastern Market, too.)

Anyone know what was going down at Washington Circle? Never seen that many police and firetrucks in one place in NW DC before. They shut down most of the traffic through the circle and I was forced to bike against traffic to get around.

My friends told me that there was a *potential* suicide attempt this afternoon near GWU Hospital involving a guy pacing along a ledge, which may explain the street closures. Frankly I'm a little surprised it didn't make it onto the front page here.

I have never heard of this group but knowing the chinese, I'm sure their grievences are legit.

Kelly:

The dirty little secret about a lot of Eastern Market veggies is that they come from the Florida market, where they are 1/3 the price. Before that, they come from all sorts of sources.

Chix will be serving Clipper City's organic line on tap!!
