Meet D.C.'s First Legal Gun Registrant

The Examiner catches up with Amy McVey, the first person to legally register a handgun in the District of Columbia since the Heller decision. That we didn't know until today that McVey successfully registered a gun is embarrassing for local reporters: apparently all the journalists waiting around on Thursday to see who would be the first to register a gun didn't notice McVey walking in to the registration office because she's a woman.

i hope women can shoot better than they can drive.

HA!!

(sorry, it's Monday morning, I haven't had any coffee yet, and it's the best I can come up with).

Funny post and funnier comment, McG. That just made my morning.

hahahahaha

PS-I'm a woman, I'm allowed to laugh.

What?! When did that happen? Are women allowed to drive cars, vote, and own property now, too?

it's a feminine gun, though, right?

:P

Please tell me she's not related to dear Timothy...

Actually, she was mentioned on the telly. It's just that her face wasn't shown and her name wasn't used, at her request.

She's actually a very well-known NIMBY ANC Commissioner in Tenleytown, known for her opposition to just about everything that would bring Tenleytown out of the 1950s. Kinda funny that she's an anal-retentive stickler for others following all the rules, yet she was breaking the law by having an unregistered gun at home.

Gosh, I guess those pesky AU students are going to have to take her threats of "get out of my yard" seriously now.

loganmo: timothy was mcveigh, not mcvey.

cranky: you make a damn good point, and she should have the hypocrisy pointed out to her a couple times over. seems like a lot of the ANC folk in ward 3 would qualify for douchebag or douchebagette of the week in any given week.

So we should expect her to put up armed resistance to the next commercial development in Tenleytown, I assume? You'll pry this neighborhood from my cold, dead hands.

Perhaps you can pick up some douchebaguettes from the local bakery for the next ANC meeting.

Hmm....Belgian beer and douchebagettes. Sounds like a good snack.

ANC members with guns? How long until the first one goes postal over parking signs or voluntary agreements?

Anyone know if Frank Winstead owns a gun? That could be fun. I'm sure he'd say he was acting to stop all of the murders and rapes that Comet Pizza was going to cause.

"i hope women can shoot better than they can drive."
This gun registration thing isn't open to Asians, is it? I mean, have you seen them drive?

I've discovered from a government firearms training facility that usually women shoot more accurately than men because men tend to have to unlearn bad techniques.

jayevee- you mean it doesn't improve my accuracy to hold the gun sideways? what else have the movies been lying to me about?!?

blittle- no kidding. particularly since she's packing a .357 magnum...

You know, I just thought of something. Aren't ANC commissioners sworn in? And don't they take an oath to faithfully execute all laws of the D of C? By registering the illegal gun, McVey is acknowledging that she was in violation of DC law for years. So wasn't she knowingly violating her oath of office?

cranky: good luck with the recall petition. them ward 3ers seem to like electing crazies and law-breakers to office. (so it surprises me that they didn't vote rees into office when they had the chance.)

Yeah, guys tend to learn by watching too many rap videos or John Woo movies. Neither of which really work in real life.

Hey! The first DC handgun registrant, DC Area Neighborhood Commissioner Amy McVey, started an online petition calling for repeal of DC's semi-automatic gun ban!

See more at http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/forum66/13765.html, press release attached in discussion thread.

Let's roll and get this petition moving!

Hey, Monkey n me were revisiting some old school Woo flicks just this weekend!

You mean I won't hit my target if I'm sliding down a bannister firing two guns at the same time?

Dagger.

@Cranky - Did I miss where it said it was an illegal gun brought in under the amnesty program? Or is there some stipulation that says the gun must be purchased in DC?

Danny Butterman: Have you ever fired two guns whilst jumping through the air?
Nicholas Angel: No.
Danny Butterman: Have you ever fired one gun whilst jumping through the air?
Nicholas Angel: No.
Danny Butterman: Ever been in a high-speed pursuit?
Nicholas Angel: Yes, I have.

Cranky and Crew, you should check your facts before you go posting if you want people to really know what happened. However, if you just like to hear each other spew your garbage...keep going.

The gun was not illegal as the Washington Post and others reported and in fact nobody at police headquarters ever asked if it was being registered from out-of-state or under amnesty. So in typical fashion, go ahead and make up stories that make you feel good.

Wow, such vitriol from and ANC Commissioner (if in fact that is Amy McVey actually posting in her own name).

Amy, if that is really you, why not let DCist break some news and share the truth, rather than act snarky?

(And you wonder why you and your ANC cohorts are chastised so greatly around the city?)

How anticlimactic. I was hoping the first gun registrant to be some bloodthirsty, drooling maniac in a hockey mask and a "Kill Em All: Let God Sort Em Out!" teeshirt.

Then I remembered Marion Barry already has his permit.

when did barry pick up the reputation of being a baby eater?

Baby rapist AND eater. Get it straight.

If you'd ever seen this guy at Kenny's BBQ, you'd know where he gets this rep. Got some Tasmanian Devil action goin on when it comes to ribs or delicious white babies.

If that really was Amy ".357" McVay, then could she enlighten us as to how she had a gun in her possession? Because no doubt her Tenleytown neighbors and ANC constituents would really like to know.

For those of you who need a remedial civics lesson, the Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land. A law enacted in violation of the Constitution is void. If DC passes a law that prohibits people from keeping and reading books, you would not label someone who kept a book a criminal because the law is obviously unconstitutional. Thus, it was DC breaking the law not Amy. And it follows as well that each of the council members who voted to pass the most recent act has violated his oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.

hey ianto94, welcome to dcist. it seems like all of the gun discussion has brought a lot of people out of the woodwork and added them to our community. please make sure to read a bunch, comment a bunch. we'd hate it if you miss out on all the stuff that's 199734828937203994 times more interesting than this thread.
