Morning Roundup: Checkpoints Return Edition
Good morning, D.C. It was a terrible weekend for far too many people in the District. A series of shootings and stabbings left at least 11 people wounded and two dead, including a man found dead in Brightwood, a man stabbed in the Palisades, a 16-year-old boy shot in Southeast, and at least six people shot in Trinidad alone in separate incidents, including 13-year-old Alonzo Robinson. Police Chief Cathy Lanier quickly moved to reestablish a "neighborhood safety zone" and checkpoint in Trinidad on Saturday night in response to the worst of the violence -- more on that later. The Post reports that no arrests have been made in any of the weekend's shooting or stabbing cases, and that police are still looking for the gold 2002 Dodge Intrepid that was allegedly used in one and perhaps more of the incidents in Trinidad.
City Defends CFSA Interim Director: Dr. Roque Gerald was named interim director of the city's troubled Child and Family Services Agency last week following the resignation of Sharlynn Bobo. Over the weekend it came out that Gerald, a psychologist, in 1989 had sex with a suicidal and depressed patient who later sued him for malpractice. Interim Attorney General Peter Nickles came out in defense of Gerald, calling the case a "mistake" that happened a long time ago which should not preclude his appointment to the office. Gerald was formerly the agency's deputy director.
D.C. Jail Inmates Say Fight, Damage Was Worse Than Officials Said: In Sunday's Post Elissa Silverman reported that prisoners at the D.C. Jail are painting a pretty different picture of the aftermath of the big fight at the corrections facility last month. It apparently got so bad that the unit where the fight occurred was unusable afterward, forcing jail facilities to move 154 inmates to another part of the jail.
Briefly Noted: Fire damages seven houses in Northwest ... Lanier releases 3 teens accused of felony after families complain ... Forty-eight Arlington County bus drivers went on strike this morning ... Runner dies after collapsing in Rockville race.

Add to that list a shooting behind the Reeves Center at 14th & V yesterday afternoon around 5pm. Not sure if anyone was hit.

Lanier releases 3 teens accused of felony after families complain
You mean Lanier oreders the release of three adults (18, 18 and 19) on auto theft.
But the decision angered rank-and-file officers who say that the youths were given special treatment because of family connections.
Investigating the matter further (i.e. Facebook), I'm curious as to how the parents of two kids from DC and another from Silver Spring have the pull to even call the chief.
Metropolitan Police Department has started a program to give citations to suspected felons in certain cases like first-degree auto theft. She could not provide any documentation about the existence of the program and she didn’t know how many felony suspects have been released under the new program. Sources in the U.S. Attorneys Office and the court system said they have not been made aware of any program.
No, that isn't a recipe for trouble; no sireee.....

ontarioroader:
I heard the gun shots yesterday also (I'm at 15th& W). A few minutes after the shots, about 15 patrol cars flew down W heading in that direction. From a friend of mine, they talked to a few people, but left shortly later. I'm guessing no one was hit, but I don't know with certainty.

According to the Examiner comments section, one of the released "teens" is the son of an NBC 4 news anchor and another "teen" is the son of an ambassador.

Boom:
Don't you know it's not a real crime unless it somehow has a chance of ending up on the news or otherwise embarrassing DC officials?
Just having someone break into your car and steal all your stuff, causing you considerable hardship, isn't actually a real crime in DC.
And it's certainly not something that we inconvenience the perpetrators over. I mean, they may have had other important things they could have been doing, instead of messing with some trifling booking procedure for theft from auto....

Regarding the gunshot, I bet it was one of those uppidty gentrifiers who got angry after they ordered an iced espresso and their server refused stating that it was against store policy (but typifying the quality of the service at Busboys, I'm sure there was at least a 30 minute delay between the time the request was made and when the server came back to say no, making the customer even angrier). C*ckpunching ensued, as well.

Sorry..should have been "...ordered an ice Espresso AT BUSBOYS AND POETS..."

@loganmo: I think it's o.k. to say cockpunch in here... or were you going for an inflection?

wow, was out of town for 3 days and you people can't keep things in order around here for me when i get back.
here's an idea, MPD. get out of your damn cars and talk to people, interact with those who aren't causing trouble as much as those who do.
as i was driving back into the city from new york, i drove past the double shell stations on south dakota just north of new york ave. there was a cop sitting there in his car, watching traffic go by, while the car in front of me was watching a TV on the dashboard.
not a GPS unit. a TV.
did the cop flinch. you guess.

@Volite I dont know the extent to which my usage is monitored @ work so I need to do some self-sensoring

Wow, an actual Stun Gun ad in the banner....are those even legal in DC?

I was impressed (stunned?) this morning as I was standing at the bus stop at 18th and California to see a MPD officer on a Segway. He "parked" it against the light post and stood watching the intersection. I actually heard him tell a couple who crossed on red to wait for the light next time. Hmm, maybe he was a rogue cop...

Well that's kind of a two-way street, innit? Snitches getting stitches and all. I snitched on the bitch next door for wearing white after Labor Day. And what did I get for my troubles? Let's just say she and her snooty boyfriend Lord Autumnbottom-Chugworth III of the Hampton Chugworths took me to Junkpunchers. Didn't even let his monocle fall out his eye. But I got back at him! Bled all over his spats.

amdcer: as much as i like to get away with the occasional jaywalk, i wish all the cops in town would crack down on everything. yeah, yeah, i can hear people out there saying 'leave them alone, focus on the killings', but i think the cops need to show that the law, not a law will be enforced, to get it across to people that lawlessness will not be tolerated.

OK, someone please explain the Trinidad situation to me like I'm a five-year-old (i.e. twice as mature as normal).
-What is it about Trinidad that's making it red hot now?
-Are these drug turf wars, gang wars, personal beefs, or what?!?
-Why do you need a checkpoint instead of increased patrols/more officers on the streets?
-What is the point of the checkpoints- to catch the guys doing this stuff, or as a deterrent?
1. If it's "deterrent" and since it seems that they just wait for the checkpoints to go away before opening fire, does this mean that full-time checkpoints will be proposed?
2. Have the checkpoints caught anyone?

Also while you were gone IMGoph, there was a beautiful purplish sky to the South on Saturday night - remnants of a day of Code Red pollution no doubt, but beautiful nevertheless.

So, so true. A year ago I had my car completely vandalized. Called the police to come out take a report. When they arrived they asked if there was anything taken from the vehicle and the damages. They then asked if I touched the vehicle? I made the mistake of saying yes. They then gave me the third degree about how I disturbed a crime scene and the CSI wont dust for prints now, even though my prints were already all over my car and the tire iron that smashed my windows and another tool was untouched and laying on the ground. And if he did dust for prints I might have to be arrested since my prints are on the car and at the very least tampered with evidence! Threatening to arrest me while taking my report! so ridiculous.
How am I supposed to tell them if anything was took from the car and what the damage is if I don't open the door to get to my glove box and center console?
Well thanks for letting me vent. In summary, no DC doesn't consider breaking into cars and vandalizing a crime, only reporting them. So have at DC, the police aren't going to be looking for you.

Mojotron -
-Trinidad is the center for mining the spice Melange.
-The Fremen are duking it out with the Harkonnens (read: thugs from PG County).
-Because it's cheaper to have one dedicate clown checking IDs than a bunch of clowns driving around getting donuts. In other words, a single Fourth Stage Guild Navigator stationed in Trinidad can do the work of legions of Sardaukar Terror Troops.
-What is the point of the checkpoints? To create the illusion that the police are doing SOMETHING. Like when you stick your hand in the Reverend Mother's pain-by-nerve-induction box with a gom jabbar to your throat. It's all in the mind.
1. I doubt full-time checkpoints will be implemented. No invading force can occupy Arrakis, Trinidad, or Ivy City. God created Northeast DC to test the faithful. One cannot go against the word of God.
2. The only thing the checkpoints have caught are a couple sandworm drivers with expired licenses, and I say those bitches were set up.

@IMGoph: Agreed - I jaywalk across that intersection all the time, but I probably wouldn't when a cop was standing there (due to deep instilled childhood lessons about being a good citizen - and a geek). Sure, jaywalking isn't exactly high on the list of DC's crime problems, but the point is, if I wouldn't do if a cop was there, what other crimes would his visible presence deter?

tmoney:
Just be glad they showed up at all. My friend had her car broken into. First, the 911 operator yelled at us for not having a 202 phone number for them to call us back on, and then proceeded to never arrive, even after a number of follow up calls. We discovered the break-in at 1am and gave up at 4am. Thanks DC!

If I understand you correctly then Monkey (I don't), this was a drive-by gom jabbaring for spice? Have you considered that maybe this was a plan to lower officer morale to the point where they quit in disgust at the useless checkpoints, then once DC burns down Vincent Orange will rebuild "new DC" (i.e. condos) on that spot unless Johnathan Rees can successfully bail the city out by convincing them to legalize Nuke?
Oh, you had? Nevermind then.

@Ksf4
Yes it is ridiculous that they still require in this day and age a 202 area code land line to return calls. How ridiculous considering the number of households (and rising) who are cell only. On the plus side it forces the police to actually come out and take the report rather than doing it to an operator over the phone. Makes you think that the report isn't going to be lost in a black hole as fast.

hillman, tmoney, ksf4:
You're right - theft from auto is a nonpunished offense in DC. My car was broken into a few months ago. The police did come after a couple of hours but didn't have any interest in trying to get prints even though I purposely didn't touch anything. I asked him if there was anything I could do to prevent it and he said "get a gun."
I am curious what the ratio of reported car break-ins is to successful arrests for car break-ins? In the scheme of things it's not lifeshattering, and I'd rather have police effort focused on preventing violent crime, but it seems as though there should be at least cursory effort made to catch the offenders. The less the perceived chance of getting caught, the more likely it is that it will keep happening.
