MOVIE: Screen on the Green kicks off its 2008 season tonight! If you've never gone before, we recommend getting there about 60 to 90 minutes before the movie starts (which is usually at 8:30, though technically it starts "at sundown.") Tonight's film is the 1962 James Bond classic Dr. No, starring Sean Connery as the man himself, and Ursula Andress as arguably the hottest of all the Bond Girls, playing Honey Ryder. Bring blankets, picnics, wine, and don't forget to do the HBO Dance. Free.

MUSIC: Fort Reno's got Death by Sexy, True Womanhood, and Sinta. As always, 7:15 p.m., free.

FOOD & DRINK: Don't forget about all the Bastille Day happenings around town. Raise a glass of wine to the age old tradition of angry French mobs at one our recommended French bistros.

READING: Ethan Canin, bestselling author of the The Palace Thief, will make an appearance at Politics and Prose to discuss his newest novel, America, America. 7 p.m.

MOVIE: If you'd prefer to see your free classic movie indoors instead of out (mosquitoes can be pretty annoying, after all), head to the National Theatre at 6:30 p.m. for a screening of Dark Victory, the maudlin tale of a woman facing a brain tumor who falls in love with one of her doctors. Part of the theatre's Bette Davis retrospective, the film stars Davis, Humphrey Bogart, and Ronald Reagan, among others. First come first serve tickets available 30 minutes before show at the door.

Wine? On the National Mall? Seriously? Why do I feel like that's a kind of thing they wouldn't allow?

they didn't "allow" it for the fireworks either, and that didn't stop friends from getting it through the "impregnable" security barriers that were set up.

I'm pretty sure they don't allow it, but this is one of those events where the authorities don't even bother to pretend they care. I think it's kind of an unspoken agreement that if we don't get drunk and cause a scene, the coppers will turn a blind eye to wine and the like being bandied about on the National Mall.

Death By Sexy were pretty rocktacular, I must say.

been a Washingtonian most of my life... but I've never had a need to drink on the Nat. Mall. I do my drinking alone at home with a gun next to my drink and a bottle of painkillers, LIKE A NORMAL PERSON!
