Caps Briefing: Green Stacks Green

Mike Green came to terms with the Capitals today on a four-year, $21 million dollar contract to play ice hockey.

In my first post on DCist, all the way back in October of 2006, I described a hard-fought match between the Caps and the Avalanche that reached its climax when "Green, the Caps star minor-league defenseman, who is expected to show signs of someday belonging in the NHL by the end of this season, went on a breakaway, faked the goalie all the way down to the ice and three feet to the left of the net, turned right and stickhandled the puck all the way over the goal-line."

For the rest of that season, Mike Green was fairly invisible as he gradually adjusted to increased defensive responsibilities in the major leagues. In the spring, the Caps sent him back to the minors, where he helped the Hershey Bears to a second consecutive Calder Cup finals appearance. Big deal. It was the minors.

Then, last year, Green stayed in the big leagues for the whole season and scored more goals than any other NHL defenseman. Not bad. He also led the Caps in playing time. Not bad either. He was also one of two defensemen voted "first team all stars" for the entire NHL. Not bad at all.

Today was the day that Green became eligible for restricted free agency. If he had waited a couple more days before signing his contract, another team would have probably offered him more money and the Caps would have had to match the offer to keep him. Green signed for $21 million because he wanted to play in D.C. and he wanted to play for coach Bruce Boudreau. Now that's something to get excited about.

Of course, as Caps fans, we're all still panicked about the players who haven't come to terms with the Caps yet. We wish we could reassure you about Green's steady defense partner Shaone Morrisonn, unbeatable goalie Cristobal Huet, rejuvenated former superstar Sergei Fedorov or local puckbunny favorite Brooks Laich. We'll let you know as soon as we hear. Until then, please stop biting your nails. You'll wreck your manicure.

i know you were probably in a rush to get that graphic done, and the sloppiness of it gives it a more DIY feel, but damn, it's ugly, and it looks like a retarded monkey did it (no offense meant to resident monkeys!)

Huet has signed with Chicago, while the Caps have signed Jose Theodore for 2 years/$9 million.

I'm a tad concerned about replacing the steady hand of Huet with the Theodore drama machine.

Also, what's with Olie going to the Melrose Bolts (along with half of Pittsburgh's roster)?

Do players "come" to terms with a team? It sounds like they had a therapy session and worked through some childhood issues.

I always thought players "agreed" to terms with a team.

Nice call Nostradamus.

21 million in 4 years, damn I wish I could make that much money in my panhandling gig.

Yeah, I'm a little disappointed that they let Huet slip away.

The Caps keeping Greenie gives me a great hockey woody. Losing Huet makes it limp all over again...
