Caveat Emptor: WMATA iPhone App

2008_0710_iphoneapp.jpgWe know that plenty of you are getting all psyched about the new 3G iPhone, which is set to deliver tomorrow morning. (Hopefully, this release won't result in as much cutting in line as the first incarnation of the much-sought after gadget.) Via We Love DC, it appears that some intrepid developers have created a new iPhone navigation application called iTrans DC (link requires iTunes), which allows you to access published Metro times. Sounds cool, but $15 seems like an outrageous amount to pay for information that you can easily get from WMATA or Meenster, with just a couple additional clicks of your finger. Some of the early iTrans DC reviewers are also skeptical. We've pasted them below:

So, iPhone users, think you'll splurge for the iTrans DC application?

afjockboidc...is that what the senator from Idaho is calling himself these days???

Not to mention you can download the same thing as a widget for Dashboard...WEAK

If using the app will make the trains on-time, then I'd gladly pay! Of course, we all know THAT won't happen...

Will I be running into idiots fiddling with this overpriced dohickey? Why, yes. Yes I will.

Wonder Chimp powers...ACTIVATE!

Shape of...A BALL GAG!

Form of...A ICE COCKPUNCH.

WTF? This thing tells me NOTHING about where I can meetup with hot transgender types for illicit rendezvous on the Yellow Line. I want my $14.99 back!

you gotta give them props for a very questionably named application. why does the rocky horror picture show come to mind?

and i haven't thought about third eye blind in years. thank you, iTrans reviewer semicharmdlifer!

so I'm guessing "let's do the time warp agaaaain!" would be their tagline?

I'm using this as my next Craigslist ad: "iTrans, uTrans?"

This app is useless because it only displays train times according to the website schedule and does not provide real time information about delays, etc. That's about the only conceivable use for this sort of iPhone app.

people find it useless, but they're giving it 3 of 5 stars? am i missing something here?

"people find it useless, but they're giving it 3 of 5 stars? am i missing something here?"

In today's world, we are all winners, and we all get 'I participated' ribbons.

IMGoph: It doesn't even seem like those people downloaded the app.. they probably just wanted to comment and it assigned a default rating, or they just clicked something to let them post.

thanks, hillman and politburo, i think you hit the nail on the head.

Fuck Steve Jobs in the ACM. I haven't even had this iPhone for a year and now they're introducing one that doesn't run on a network that connects at dial-up speed? Eat shit and die Jobs!!!

$15? HAHAHAHAHA. I love how iPhone users pay insane amounts for the same thing PC users expect to be free.

@ClintJCL

Who the hell says anybody's paying for it? The iPhone app store just launched today. The firmware needed to run apps like this still hasn't been officially released. This app might be a total flop for all we know.

Besides that, how is an iPhone comparable to a PC? You're not either an *iPhone* user or a *PC* user. Plenty of PC users own iPhones. Also, you're entirely missing the point. Apps like this generally read XML data, which means you don't have to spend time pulling an entire WMATA web page over a cellular network to get the data you want. It's much faster this way.

You really don't know what you're talking about, do you?

Seems like a good App for tourists, but for the rest of us. Not worth it IMO.

From the Summary I've read of it, it's JUST a searchable map with the "schedule" (which is really never accurate with the Metro system).

$5? Sure. $15? No way.

The iPhone SDK has some pretty powerful programming tools. I myself am working on an app called "iSuck" which uses the iPhone's built-in GPS to locate the closest glory hole. The freeware version doesn't have access to my database of "For a good time, call..." phone numbers. I put it together over a weekend while sitting on the toilet in The Green Lantern doing "research."

Now one of these for the BUS system would be amazing..the metro comes ever 5-15 minutes even on the weekend...but oh how those buses can be elusive! They should want to offer it free so people can use their system more easily but I might even pay for that!

The CityTransit NYC iPhone app looks like what this WMATA app should be, but isn't.
