The Fairfax Times reports that Chevy Chase Bank will be closing all 54 of its D.C.-area branches that are located inside Giant Food stores starting this August. The bank said that its customers have expressed a preference for the bank's more traditional neighborhood branches over the ones located inside Giants. That statement would have us believe that Chevy Chase Bank customers prefer branches that aren't open on the weekends -- many of the Giant-based branches were the only locations open on Saturdays and/or Sundays, so their elimination means Chevy Chase customers will have few options if any to do banking on the weekends.

Car Pushed Into Anacostia River By Train

Chevy Chase Bank would be wise to close some of their downtown branches as well. Can anybody explain why there is a branch on nearly every block on K Street? I'd rather have a single 24-hour branch and walk the extra 500 feet.
who on earth goes to a brick and mortar bank anymore?
spookiness: for the coin-counting machines
On K-Street, I'm guessing temps go to brick and mortar banks. It always takes a couple weeks to set up direct deposit.
That and maybe they catch the odd first-year attorney for a lunch-break mortgage app. If so I'd like to see a study on the correlation between sharing of french fries and acceptance.
The last time I was in a Giant, a chubby-chaser was sitting in the Oval Office. Can't say as I miss either.
Banks see brick & mortar banks as advertisements, human billboards if you will. Don't worry about Chevy Chase's atm's though. Worry about how much exposure they have to the housing bubble. Why they were making loans in Orange County, California, I don't know, but they're losing millions in that market.
it's been amazing how many new bank branches have opened in the city the last few years, and on the most expensive corners rent-wise. remember 10 years ago when they were telling us that online banking was the wave of the future, and there was going to be no need for the brick-and-mortar banks. strange how this is all playing out...
There are a handful of weekend brick and mortar Chevy Chase banks scattered around. I don't think closing the Giant branches will be too bad.
I hope they're not pulling their ATMs out of Giant as well.
for the coin-counting machines
Speaking of which, can anyone recommend a good, centrally-located place with a coin-counting machine? My local Safeway has one, but it hasn't worked since before the 2006 midterm elections. Much like the Safeway itself, come to think.
I don't think the coin machines have ever worked in Chevy Chase Banbks. Seriously, I have been to 5 different branches from Dale City to DC and they never work...I think they were a ploy to get customers in. Coinstar usually always works in Giant/Shoppers/Bloom..they charge you a small fee though.
Chevy Chase can't keep it's branch located outdoor ATMs open and working during normal working hours, so the ones in the Giant stores are usually more reliable! The branches in the burbs are few and far apart, esp. in the Alexandria area.
The best places to get rid of coins:
- most self-checkout lanes, Giant, etc. I dump pennies at Giant
- some Post Office self-service machines take pennies
spookiness: Or you could just throw away pennies like I do (when leaving them in the "give a penny, take a penny" tray isn't an option). Helps with inflation!
