Heller Plans to Run Against Eleanor Holmes Norton

2008_0717_gun.jpgIf you agree with some of the commenters in the Roundup that WUSA's account of Dick Heller's experience at the District's gun registration office this morning was a little confusing, seems like you're probably right. D.C. Wire has what appears to be a better report that Heller didn't even bring a gun with him to register this morning, but instead expressed "his frustrations with the District's continued ban on semiautomatic weapons." What's up with that weird report, WUSA?

In more exciting news, the same D.C. Wire report says that Heller plans to challenge the so far unopposed Eleanor Holmes Norton for her seat as the District's non-voting delegate. Heller has until the end of August to get the 3,000 signatures he needs to be placed on the ballot. Unsurprisingly, Heller plans to run as a libertarian.

Dick Heller loves him some gun.

Yeah, I've also been frustrated by the District's ban on semiautomatic weapons. Don't you realize how many robberies I could be out there foiling right now? Like, all of them!

Can someone explain to me why he would want to run against Congresswoman Norton? Being the Federal representative for the city, it's not like she has any say over the city government who are the ones making the rules and regs for gun ownership. Wouldn't it make more sense to run against Mayor Fenty or his city council rep?

unapposed?! damn, now i'm running.

um, make that 'unopposed'. sorry, tough morning and not enough Guinness in my blood system.

From the WUSA link:

[Heller] says he was rejected. He says his gun has seven clips. Heller says the City Council legislation allows weapons with fewer than eleven clips. A spokesman for the DC Police says the gun was a bottom-loading weapon, and according to their interpretation, all bottom-loading guns are outlawed. Top loading guns, the police spokesman says, are grouped by the number of clips.

They're fucking kidding, right? Who wrote this? An 8-year-old?

So I guess a picture of a gun is better than a picture of say Heller?

don't you know, big l, heller is a gun. that's why he wanted this law overturned. he was sick and tired of being discriminated against. and can you blame him? he can't help the way he was born.

SpeakSoftly - Because this is a publicity stunt, that's why. Since the Delegate has no powers, you don't need a platform to run for the position, and people are more likely to use a protest vote on a meaningless office.

Plus, if he does actually win, he wouldn't have to do anything.

He sure runs a good bakery. He does doesn't he?

So, as a potential gun owner, would this be legal?

It seems like you could fire multiple clips with one of these, so I'm guessing not.

Heller's family sold their bakeries years ago. He has nothing to do with them anymore.

ibc....

i totally agree. piss poor writing. i just commented on the story itself on the WUSA site.

Thanks HCE ...

I thought maybe he was still putting the holes in their donuts with his very inefficient bottom-loading hand gun.

Norton is unopposed in the September Democratic primary, but for the November general, which is when Heller would be running, she already has an opponent, Maude Louise Hills of the Statehood Green Party. Not that Hills is likely to be a threat, but then neither is Heller.
