What's That You Say?

2008_0804_say.jpgHowdy everyone, and welcome to another hootin', hollerin' edition of What's That You Say?

It certainly was an interesting morning on Thursday, between the vigilante turtle and the dog-killing drug raid at the home of the Mayor of Berwyn Heights. It's a good thing MWP was around to put the mayor's amount of dope in the proper perspective - hence, our Comment of the Week:

I think comparing a giant tub of mustard from CostCo to 32 pounds of the chronic is a bit of a stretch. Maybe if it were 3 or 4 pounds, but 32? It would take Cheech, Chong, B-Real, The entire Portland Trailblazers roster, Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and Willie Nelson a week to smoke all of that.

After the jump, there's nothing quite as refreshing as taking in arguments about guns, especially when there's no guns involved.

D.C. gun rights - always, always a good way to get a comment slapfest going.

Also in this week's "Gun Comment Roundup" - timmeroo goes glass half-full and suggests that Speaker Pelosi's dilemma is as good a chance as any to lobby for voting rights:

As much as I hate the idea of stepping all over Home Rule, I'm glad Democrats are going to get the credit for intervening in the DC Council's blatant defiance of the Heller ruling.

Pretty slick move by Pelosi. Maybe she can attach an amendment to the bill giving us representation? Rights all around!

Montgomery College has completely banned tobacco products on its campus, but as cminus notes, it could be much worse:

Meh. I went to a college that banned all alcohol on campus, even for people over legal age. I'm partial to a drink myself now and then, but so long as a place called "not on campus" existed it wasn't a big deal. It wasn't even a deal, or a small deal. It was a little bit over one-tenth of one-twentieth of a deal, IIRC. I'm sure smokers at MoCoCoCo will adjust just as we did.

Cougars! College Park! (That's true, just way too easy.)

-----

Oh, Vaughan, we do so love it when people tie posts together so deftly:

i do like how the lady in blue pants appears to be violating metro's ban on rapture.

-----

A beer truck spilled its contents on the Beltway Thursday night, but most of the concern was about the exact brew lost. MikeB penned the consensus opinion:

Agreed. If it was Budweiser, they could probably just suck it all up with a Shop Vac and put it back in the truck with no noticeable difference.

JimD on a tree falling over on K Street:

A tree falls down, crushing a van and an SUV?

THE PLANET STRIKES BACK

Somebody call Night Shyamalan!

Everyone had their chance to request the next _____pocolypse.

MahoganyShip, this would be the best film ever.

This whole saga has all the plot trappings of a good old-fashioned 80's movie, somewhere between Police Academy and Revenge of the Nerds, but with ping pong.

Unfortunately, summer's also the time for all the crazies to come out of the woodwork. This week, we highlighted a couple of such instances found on Craigslist - first, a woman's story about fighting back against an ass grabber (who subsequently had to re-post her story). Then someone caught a guy yanking the chain in his car, while driving.

And while it may seem secondary, the constant removal of the woman's posts relays a weakness of Craigslist in general, as somegirl points out:

Despite craigslist's laughable official line that "97% of all listings flagged are in violation of the terms of use," the reality is that two or three vindictive assholes can get ANYTHING flagged. Pretty much everything I've ever posted in personals has been flagged. Small business ads get flagged down constantly by competitors who can't stand fair competition. It's a big problem with the system. I'm surprised this woman's rant stayed up as long as it did.

Hoyacougar - you don't have to register or have a valid email address to flag. You just have to hit "flag."

But of course, The Wonderful World of Monkeyrotica had to go and top us all. Again.

Oh, jeebis, where haven't I seen people peeing in DC? Rhode Island Metro platform, Stanton Park, outside the shoe repair store at 13th and U. This has got to be one of the most weak-bladdered cities on the east coast, with the possible exception of New Haven. Best place so far was actually on the potato chip rack at the bodega at 18th and Florida. I didn't bother to figure out what the guy was on. And that stretch of Florida between 16th and 17th has always been something of a "knob-gobbler's lane." Quiet, secluded, that big wall on the north side. A guy can lean back and really focus his concentration. You don't have the damned busdriver yelling at you, or nosey kids axeing what dem crazy white folk be doin back dey.

Anyway, I wouldn't go so far as to call a pre-op transsexual "a woman."

Not yet, anyway.

Yeah, the D.C. Public Library system might be reducing hours - but as hillrat points out, many may not notice:

I never cease to be amazed at how underused our libraries are. I got hip to the jive when I needed to establish DC residency and found out that the easiest way to do so was getting a library card.

-----

Oh, that's just cruel, McGillicuddy. True, but cruel.

i think they should also do a feature called "50 Ugliest People Working for Nonprofit Companies". they'll have a much bigger pool of people to choose from.

-----

The sub-par level of recycling in the city (not to mention the lack of a compost collection) got IMGoph to thinking:

it's all these things that make you realize, while the district might be reliably democratic when it comes to elections, we're far from being as progressive as we could be.

-----

Scrabulous is dead, long live Scrabulous. (Frankly, we here at the Say never really got the hype - I mean, it was pretty damn easy to cheat on every move with no one watching you.)

Oh, and Dauragon? There's always YouTube, man. Just breathe.

It's time to engrave some trophies - three cheers for this week's awards!

Alright, mdove11 gets some recognition for repping Little Mac, the scrawny little pugilist that I could never get to dodge Mike Tyson's flurries in Punch-Out. But where's his trainer, Doc Lewis? Those two are inseparable - a duality forged with cut scenes and mid-fight banter like "Dodge his punch, then counter punch!". I mean, we never would have beaten King Hippo without him! Ah, well, I suppose I'm just nitpicking - we're still going to bestow the Avatar Award for Achievement in the Field of Avatars for it. Nice work, mdove!

We're also happy to honor 3jacks2nines with the Username of the Week - that's a nice looking poker hand there.

There is something severely buggered with the code in this post when viewed in Explorer (although not in Firefox). The entire post has a wallpaper image of the Capitol in twilight with a watermark that says "Latest News from DCist"

Yes. Please fix it. I can't be bothered to try and read it.

We're working on it, just a small CSS-related problem, should be fixed soon.

The wallpaper reminded me of a YTMND posting - hard to read but with the possibility of something funny in it.

solve your problems easily, use firefox!

Goph:

Some of us are office-mandated IE drones, unfortunately.

Better?

Thanks for the award. I will display it proudly next to my "Best Public Speaker" trophy on Facebook.

aaron: some of us should find a different office then, maybe! ;)

some of us were just upgraded to IE7 2 weeks ago. Firefox-like tabs FTW!
