Transit on Tuesday: All May Park, All Must Pay More
If you're a frequent parker in Arlington, you may want to budget in some extra cash for a rate hike at parking meters. According to the Examiner, Arlington County officials are considering making some sweeping changes to the current system, such as extending the metered hours and raising the current flat rate of $1 per hour.
Obviously, there's a tough balance to keep here for County officials - on the one hand, the Wilson Boulevard corridor has many places to eat and shop, and having available parking is tantamount to stimulating those economic opportunities. That said, pretty much everywhere between Rosslyn and Falls Church is accessible with the Orange line and a little bit of walking. But hey, on the bright side, you'll at least be able to use your credit card to pay for your more expensive parking, if the County's draft transportation plan goes through as planned later this year.
Engines and Cabooses: The ramp from the E Street Expressway to I-66 West has been shut down by DDOT for repairs – it should reopen on August 25… Metro Transit Police will participate in National Night Out ceremonies tonight… For those who Metro to and walk around Foggy Bottom, some sidewalks will be closed for excavation work at 2200 Pennsylvania Ave., so be aware… WaPo takes the Federal Highway Trust issue and runs with it… Pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday on the B-W Parkway ramp from New York Avenue... Metro tells Examiner and Express to stop blocking entrances to stations with stacks of newspapers every morning.

Wapo article is good.. but still falls into a very common trap.
""There is a whole confluence of government policies -- tax, spending, regulatory and administrative -- that have subsidized sprawl," said Bruce Katz, director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution. A gallon of gasoline costs more than $8 in Britain, Germany, France and Belgium, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Much of the price difference is due to higher taxes."
This paragraph reinforces the myth that the only way to change our policy is to add a $4 gas tax. There is also a very critical error in thinking here. The absence of a tax is not a subsidy. Our relatively low gas taxes were not what the wonk had in mind when he talks about subsidizing sprawl.

Hummmm. Sweet. Hey arlington, R U Listening? Here are two things to ponder:
- Parking Rules need to be consistent throughout Arlington. Having some meters on during saturdays and some off is just a recipe for sticking people with tickets and making them miffed.
- Street Parking should be short term for short visits to a store. Anything longer than short term, and push people into parking lots (this is not referencing the good parking meter areas like in Clarendon - this is on street parking). I am not sure why some shops dont scream. Like in Ballston, you cant order a pizza from the pizza joint -- because you cant park for 5 minutes to pick it up.
- Oh and stop those stupid cyborg meters in the middle of the block that spit out receipts on tuesdays during odd months. There are so many things wrong with that things - they are disasters.
Now for you stores. Its simple. Parking = business. Two spots in front of your store with nasty gram signs that say "Parking for Acme Stuff Store Only" = I'll go shop somewhere else.
Really.
Peace out.
