Cheap Airfare Alert

We don't normally bother with this sort of thing, but the TravelZoo newsletter recently sent out a bunch of awesomely cheap flights from D.C.. New York, Boston, Shanghai and more are all within your reach for really, really low prices on United. You have to book your flight by this Friday (8/8) to get the discounted fares, but you can travel through November. Since getting to the grocery store costs about $48 dollars these days, a $64 flight to Boston seems pretty notable. That's a whole lot cheaper than Amtrak, too.

thanks DCist!

Those are some pretty good rates. Too bad I hate flying.

Hmm these rates aren't bad at all... unless you happen to be thirsty on the flight - $3 for a drink. Cold? $7 for a pillow and blanket. Have extra baggage? $25 right there. Bah.

don't forget the $382 in 9/11 taxes that they rape you with on every airfare.

It may be cheaper than Amtrack, but it's still burning tons of fuel and leaving an enormous carbon footprint. If you really cared about the environment, you'd stand naked by the side of the road with your thumb out. You'd also send pictures to monkeyrotica @ cheapnakedhitchhikers dot com.

Yeah, these sale prices appear to be more valid for weekday travel than weekend. Since I'm not a trust-fund baby with no job, I cannot seem to get a rate I couldn't get otherwise through AAA.

Nothing I found, in a few test searches for international trips to the noted regions that I am hoping to scrounge together enough for this fall and over Christmas, even competed with what I can find quoted (taxes included) via Kayak.com.

Same here-- I have a few trips (national and international) that I'm planning for this fall, and my search did not come up with any deals.

where the hell is traverse city?

Jennx - it's in Michigan.

The only reason why I know is because they've got their own annual cherry festival. *drool*

traverse city is quite nice, actually. there are a lot of outdoor activities, like boating, available. also, mackinaw island is not too far away...

Umm... I followed all the rules- traveling on Saturday and Tuesday- and the cheapest flight (which takes about 70 minutes) to Burlington, VT is $446.50?! thats about 4x what is was a few years ago.

... and the cheapest flight to Boston is $173. Hardly a "deep discount." I flew to Boston on US Airways for about $170 round trip in May.

Compared to last year, this is nothing special. But compared to what I've seen recently, it seems pretty good. I could knock $200 off a trip back west ($400 vs $600), so I'd say that's something. Even though last year that trip would have cost $300.
