>> Civilian Art Projects has some entertainment for you on Friday. From 7 to 9 p.m., they open Quart Bag, an exhibit featuring 32 ounces of creativity from each of the 100 artists in this community art show. All works are $100 or less and, Civilian jokes, "FAA approved." Afterwards, head to Comet Ping Pong, which will have beer and pizza specials, while The Apes, Fiasco, and Double Dagger will be providing the music for the afterparty starting at 10 p.m. $10.

>> Randall Scott's new renegade film series, Video Smack, just sent out the announcement for the second showing, tomorrow night at his gallery on 14th Street, starting at 8 p.m. Head over for a cold beer and the free showing of the art flicks Windmaker by Kika Nicolela and How to Make a Baby by Jemima Burrill. While you're there, check out phase three of 8 Photographers, featuring Alexandra Catiere & Shen Wei.

>> Transformer Gallery will be taking a little vacation during August, but were sure to leave something to entertain you in the meantime. Sitting in their front window will be the video Moment of Zen: Meeting Buddha in the Road by John James Anderson. The meditative piece will be on display starting Friday at 1 p.m., ongoing through August 26, so swing by and enjoy a viewing.

>> Artist Steve Strawn, who displayed his photographs recently in the DCAC show Kid Mutiny, is expanding on those pieces for a new exhibit opening today at Dahlak. Stop by starting at 7 p.m. tonight for the opening reception and wine and martini specials.

>> H&F Fine Arts will hold an opening reception for Portraits and Color Work, featuring paintings by Al Burts, Russell Lewis and Derrick Vaughn. Saturday, 5 to 7 p.m.

>> Touchstone Gallery hosts Totally Femme, a group show with five female artists, Michele Cormier, Teresa Roberts Logan, Paula Lantz, Janathel Shaw, and Dina Volkova, who each use totally different media. Totally. Friday, 6 to 8:30 p.m.

>> The Torpedo Factory's Target Gallery celebrates the opening of an exhibit by their first artist-in-residence, Julie Camarata from Knoxville, Tenn. Her site-specific installation, Slick, has been open to the public for the last two weeks while she put everything together, so visitors could see the evolution of the project. Tonight is the official opening reception, so join them from 6 to 8 p.m., with a brief artist discussion at 7 p.m.

>> Awhile back we covered the unveiling of the Foggy Bottom Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit. You can go on a self-guided tour at any time by grabbing one of the pamphlets available at most of the sculpture sites, or you can attend one of the monthly guided tours. The next one is this Saturday starting at 11 a.m., beginning at the corner of New Hampshire Avenue and Eye Street NW, led by artist Craig Kraft and Pink Line Project's Philippa Hughes.

>> Artery 717 in Alexandria is opening a big group show of over 20 artists on Friday. The night is also a book release party for Hidden Ink by Renee AZCRA Woodward (slightly NSFW) and will feature a live shoot by studio Four Hundred. The art sales will go towards Action Against Hunger. 7 to 11 p.m.

I wrote a blog entry about the my Quart Bag used photograph above if you are curious about the story behind it's creation.

My opening at Dahlak went well last night, and will be up until the 1st week in September. Dahlak is a pretty cool venue with a funky up-and coming vibe. I highly recommend it for the drinks, the bands and (ahem) the art. -Steve Strawn

Check the photos from the Quart Bag exhibition. There were some really great entries!!
