Morning Roundup: Calvo Vindicated

20080807_roundup.jpg

Good morning, Washington. Those of you keeping an eye on the vice presidential prospects of Tim Kaine can add another data point to your elaborately-constructed electoral theories: yesterday the Virginia Governor once again took to the national airwaves to discuss foreign policy and to dodge questions about being Sen. Obama's running mate.

Arrests Made In Calvo Marijuana Raid; Calvo Appears Innocent: Yesterday we learned that the police raid of Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo's home — during which cops broke through a door and killed two dogs — had been conducted without a proper warrant. Today we learn that it may have occurred without a good reason, too. The Post reports that two men have been arrested in connection with a package of marijuana sent to the Calvo home, which prompted the raid. The pair's alleged scheme involved shipping drugs to unsuspecting strangers and intercepting the packages.

Details On Summer Jobs Program's Budget-Busting: The Post answers the question we asked on Tuesday: where did all the money for the city's summer jobs program go? It turns out that bad estimates are to blame for the budget overrun. The projected tab for the program assumed fewer kids would sign up, didn't count the higher wages that some participants would get, and inexplicably failed to factor in the recent national minimum wage increase.

Briefly Noted: Va. public colleges' tuition rates rising... Maryland ATM skimming ring nabs $60k, still on the loose... New tech solves 1982 Maryland murder...

This Day In DCist: One year ago a local boy made it to the finals on Hell's Kitchen and we talked to Spoon. Two years ago Revolution Records closed shop and we called time of death on D.C. Wire and Mayor Williams' blog.

Gorgeous picture! I'm trying to figure out whether if the white line coming out of the bowl's actually water spouting out or is it actually something else in the background?

The DC summer jobs program is ridiculous. It's a totally unnecessary expense, designed primarily so that Marion Barry could dispense jobs for kids as favors for getting their parents to vote for him.

Many of these kids do absolutely nothing for their 'jobs'. Quite a few don't even bother to show up.

Does anyone really believe that 20,000 kids are actually doing productive work every summer?

The entire charade should be done away with. It's one Councilmember using taxpayer funds (of which he apparently doesn't pay any) to ensure his own reelection.

Many of these kids do absolutely nothing for their 'jobs'. Quite a few don't even bother to show up.

The whole idea of the job program is for the kids sit around and do nothing but eat snacks, watch tv, and drink soda. How else are they supposed to fatten up for "the harvest" when unrepentant cannibal Marion Barry descends on the holding pen with a chainsaw, a fork, and a lobster bib?

Don't think of it as a costly boondoggle but as an investment in fine dining.

Won't somebody think about the children?!

The pair's alleged scheme involved shipping drugs to unsuspecting strangers and intercepting the packages.

An idea that could only be cooked up after a long night of bong hits and Doritos. I've found that the combination of THC and Cool Ranch Flavor completely overwhelms the logic centers of the brain. I blame Phish, Gerry Garcia, and Bob Marley, in that order. Definitely the worst idea since "Woomp! There It Is!: A Hip-Hopera."

Is this Marion Barry International Haus of Fat Penned-in Children on the Restaurant Week list?

Cause I couldn't get any rezes at Junkpunchers.

Don't think of it as a costly boondoggle but as an investment in fine dining.

Restaurant week is right around the corner, food costs are rising.. all too plausible.

DC Wire is still sucking

The summer youth program is a big mess. Whole lotta junkpunching needs to be done to ensure accountability.

PG County Po-Po are royally screwed and will be signing over a nice-sized check to the Calvo family. More junkpunching will be done to ensure accountability.

Also newsworthy - a DC gov't agency has approved Verizon Fios for DC. But the City Council will have to approve the franchise agreement, which will likely take another year. Look for all sorts of crazy demands on Verizon from Councilmembers looking to have their support be bought.

The DC Summer Jobs program is, has been, and ever shall be the last refuge for losers who lack the basic math and managerial skills to run a narcotics ring, or the guts to sell their bodies for scientific experiments. That kidney I sold in the 11th Grade paid for one magical summer in a Thai brothel and a lifetime of syphilis. And I still have the Sony Minidisc player I paid for with my three-week stay in the advanced colonoscopy and distance medicine center of Hopkins University. Granted, I can still barely hold my fudge, but for a brief moment, I was on the cutting edge of technology and the envy of all my friends who were stuck staring at motivational posters in Marion Barry's private abbatoir.

I'm assuming water. Any picture at that time of day would require an exposure that's slower than the rate the water is moving, so it'll turn into a streak. Though the background lighting does make it look like it's separate from the fountain.

Yeah that was what I've been trying to figure out. The bowl looks like a decorative piece that you'd find on top of a stone pillar stationed at the entrance of the park. You can see in the back that this shot was taken at an upward angle as if the bowl's high up.

re: Calvo Appears Innocent

Ahh, I LOVE the smell of lawsuits in the morning!!

for real, calvo should sue the police dept., or the state, or whoever you sue in these kinds of matters, for an obscene amount. the way that raid was conducted was disgusting and insane, on a guy with presumably no record...ridiculous.

This totally proves that if you're not guilty, you've got nothing to fear from the government.

Bring on the surveillance cameras, unwarranted wiretaps, and suspension of habeas corpus.

Storm Troopers in PG County? Who knew?

"Who's at the door, hon?

"Let me see....aaaaaahhhhhh!"

Remember kids, this is just one of many reasons to disrespect authority.

Oh Monkey...

a lifetime of syphilis

Two big a$$ shots of penicillin in the butt, and you too can be syphilis-free!

At a certain point, the spirochetes become like family. It's a form of Stockholm syndrome, except with lesions. Still, I wouldn't trade my venereally rotten brain for all the pee in China.

Does anyone really believe that 20,000 kids are actually doing productive work every summer?

I often say that, but about interns.
