John Edwards Admits to Affair
It's a really slow day for local news, so over on the DCist staff email list, all we're talking about is John Edwards. He's admitted to ABC News that he did have an affair with Rielle Hunter, and defends himself by saying that he didn't love her and that his wife, Elizabeth, was in remission at the time. Because, apparently, it would have been totally inexcusable of him to cheat while his wife was undergoing cancer treatment, but she was totally healthy then, so it's OK! What I can't figure out is why he had to confess to this right now unless there's some proof that he is the father of Hunter's child, even though he claims there's no way he can be.

Well, if you're going to pick a day to break the news, a Friday afternoon in August is good.
But a Friday afternoon in August when Russia invades another country and the Olympics are about to start -- that's managing the news cycle.

It's too bad. I liked him.
Not like I give a crap about what he does in his personal life, but this will ruin the rest of his career. Despite what people say about his relevance, he still does a lot of good work with PAC's and charities.
On a logical level, I'd say be fair: after chemo, a woman's sex drive is about nil. But that's what God created high-class hookers for.

It's funny how the press assumes that this revelation will be the end of Edwards' career, while McCain, who also cheated on his wife, is the presidential nominee for the self-styled family values party. Why does it ruin Edwards and not McCain? It must be the media's liberal bias.
