Always thinking about that carbon footprint. Who says DC kids can't learn? Isn't that the bridge to Roosevelt Island? I'm pretty sure those waves are inhabited by the tentacled beast that is the former 26th President. He was Assistant Secretary of the Navy, after all. He can be summoned by standing on the bridge at midnight, closing your eyes, and chanting "Bloody Teddy" three times while holding a bottle of Moosehead.

I was in that bay bridge traffic yesterday. It took over 4 hours to go 10 miles approaching the bridge on the way back to DC. One of the worst traffic jams I've ever been in.

Harnesses and leashes do nothing but lower a child's self-esteem and reinforce patriarchal power heirarchies and phallocentric hegemony. Children should be allowed to roam free, into heavy traffic and deep water. How else are the expected to learn how to dive for pearls, splint broken legs and arms, or appreciate the subtle nuances of Frogger?

Call me old fashioned, I make do with the classic Radio Flyer buttwagon, a potty, and a pair of bricks. No scooping required. It's a mobile, self-contained, ca-ca poop-system. Hot tip: a can of Lysol and a match turn it into a kickass rocket wagon. It's not "toilet training." It's "toilet learning."

If you're going to put a safety leash on a toddler, I highly recommend going all out and outfitting him/her with a Hannibal Lector facemask. You can't be too careful around buffet stations, and it makes for a fabulous conversation starter at Saint Ex. Really, I know whereof I speak. It's worth the cost of the kid's therapy when he hits adolescence.

Post also has an article this morning on the commercial development going in in NoMa (totally h8 that name). Problem is that one recently completed building sits totally empty with no tenants. Two reasons: 1) there's not much commercial/retial development in them thar parts (very few places to get lunch, no Starbucks, no dry cleaners, no massage parlors); and 2) the neighborhood gets pretty rough pretty quickly.

Don't judge the leash, i'd say. we have no idea what that kid is like. did you ever think that maybe the leash is for Our protection? who knows? he looks all cute and blonde haired, then it turns out he's like jet li in that awful french film.
