Reader, Meet Author

DistractedMONDAY:

Award-winning author and columnist Maggie Jackson will be at the Busboys and Poets in D.C. to talk about Distracted: The Erosion of Attention and the Coming Dark Age. If a dark age is characterized by a decline in civilization, and Jackson believes it's only just now "coming," she hasn't been watching enough reality TV. 6:30 p.m.

Dick Meyer, a long-time CBS journalist who now spends his time with NPR, will be making an appearance at Politics and Prose to discuss his book Why We Hate Us. We don't know about Meyer, but we don't hate us. We're perfectly comfortable with the concept of 'us,' no matter what our parents say. 7 p.m.

TUESDAY:

So there's this author from the area named George Pelecanos, and he's written a couple of crime novels. He was also involved with the writing and production team on some show on HBO. Heard of him? Well, he's going to be at Politics and Prose to talk about his latest book, Turnaround. 7 p.m.

Raed Jarrar will be at the Busboys and Poets in D.C. to sign and discuss The Iraq War Blog, An Iraqi Family's Inside View of the First Year of the Occupation. 6 p.m.

WEDNESDAY:

Ted Widmer, a foreign policy adviser and speechwriter in the Clinton White House, will be at the New America Foundation to talk about the Ark of Liberties. Is that the second Ark Noah built to protect us from his Monster Ark? No, it's Widmer's take on the history of America's foreign policy. That probably wouldn't make an awesome Sci-Fi movie, unless you add tons of fake monsters. 12:15 p.m. Widmer will also be appearing at Politics and Prose. 7 p.m.

THURSDAY:

Life coach Talane Miedaner will be at Politics and Prose to discuss her book, The Secret Laws of Attraction: The Effortless Way to Get the Relationship You Want. 7 p.m.

Pat Choate will be at the New America Foundation to discuss Dangerous Business: The Risks of Globalization for America. 12:15 p.m.

FRIDAY:

NovelTeens Ink, an after-school and summer journalism camp intended to expose youth of the D.C. metropolitan area to the many facets of journalism, will be holding a pre-launch party at the Busboys and Poets in D.C. for the magazine 360 Seconds. 6 p.m.

Reality television? Most reality programs are basically game shows and those have been around for decades. According to Jim is surest sign that our culture is in decline.

Widmer is brilliant - he was my major advisor at Washington College. I recommend trying to get to either event.

When has culture not been in decline? Culture is like theater, which has been in a perpetual state of "decline" since ancient Greece. That's why they call it "the magnificent invalid."

Get back to me when they start talking about "the end of history." Again.

Thanks for the post about Maggie Jackson! In case anyone misses her tonight, she's also repeating the event tomorrow, Aug. 12 at the Busboys in Shirlington at 7 p.m. Here's the address: 4251 S Campbell Ave, Arlington VA 22206. Hope to see everyone there!
