Two Men Fatally Shot Near Union Station

WJLA has the latest on the two men who were fatally shot in the unit block of K Street NW, not far from Union Station, at around 10 a.m. this morning. One of the victims was 18-year-old Johnquon Wright. The age and identity of the second victim has not been confirmed. The Post says that Mayor Fenty showed up to the scene about two hours after the shooting. Wright's mother is a paramedic with D.C. Fire and EMS.

A reader who rode past the scene a little after 3 p.m. said police were still on the scene investigating at that time.

The two deaths bring the total number of homicides in the District so far this year to 118.

Listen, the thing is that this is Sursum Corda, one of the most notoriously violent projects in the city. No one should be that surprised.

What is really interesting about this is that in the past the Post would have probably dismissed it as just another murder in Sursum Corda. But now with the development, the story's different. Now all the sudden it's a murder "a few blocks from Union Station" and in the heart of "an area targeted for development".

The Plan moves ahead unabated.

Let's not forget the shootings happened less than a block away from Walker-Jones Elementary School. DCPS has planned to tear down the old building within the next two years as construction has already begun on the new building next door.

Isnt Sursum Corda getting redeveloped as mixed use? If it follows the other project models, the residents will be scattered, but offered the right to return...after the three years it'll take to finish the redevelopment.

That part of the city has been a shi* hole for many decades. It's surprising that more people don't get shot around there. Bulldoze the whole area and start all over again with nice housing. Screw that "mixed housing" crap.

I believe the correct term is "crime ridden THIRD WORLD s***hole." We'd all appreciate using this agreed-to language when referring to any part of DC outside Upper Northwest. Thank you and please enjoy your stay in our Nation's crime ridden Third World s***hole Capitol.

Interesting, Reid.

Where does "NoMa" stop? Technically I'd call this north of Mass... Oops, here comes the Real Estate SWAT team to shut me up!

Anything outside upper northwest is a third world s***hole?

Jeez, why didn't someone tell us we were living in something like that? And here I thought our neighborhood was kinda swell. Oh well...Spring Valley here I come.

Did the Corps of Engineers ever cleanup that WWI era munitions contamination in "Silent" Spring Valley, or did they just move all the arsenic to Fort Reno? Because anything that helps kill off hipster bands and their audiences is providing a valuable public service.

They took the Poltergeist route, all they did was move the signs that said "Hey, be careful. There's some Mustard Gas around here." The canisters themselves are still safely buried beneath Wagshalls. It should be alright so long as nobody starts digging. Or walking too heavily. Or, you know, breathing too deeply.

"It should be alright so long as nobody starts digging. Or walking too heavily. Or, you know, breathing too deeply."

Shouldn't be a problem in Spring Valley.

I think they planted a bunch of ferns.

Seriously.

I thought they just crossed out "Mustard Gas" and wrote in "Honey Dijon Grey Poupon" in crayon?

For what it's worth, the Post published an article today giving these shootings a better context besides "ohmygod, two guys just got shot near some yuppies."
